School, Love and Everything In Between
Being a student is already a lot on its own. You have lectures to attend, assignments to submit, exams to prepare for and, sometimes, clinical postings that leave you completely exhausted.
Now imagine adding love to all of that. 😂
Suddenly, you're not just worried about passing your courses. You're also wondering why someone hasn't replied to your message, why their attitude suddenly changed or whether that “good morning” text actually means something.
Being a student with a love life can be exciting, but it can also be complicated.
Sometimes, having someone you care about can make school life feel a little easier. You have someone to talk to after a stressful day, someone to encourage you before an exam or someone who simply asks, “Have you eaten?” after you've been running around all day.
Those little things can mean a lot.
But then there is the other side of it.
Trying to balance school and a relationship isn't always easy. There are days when school takes up almost all your time. Between lectures, assignments, group work and other responsibilities, replying to messages can start feeling like another assignment. 😭
And let's not forget the financial aspect of dating as a student.
Love is supposed to be about feelings, but somehow, money always finds its way into the conversation. Transport fare, food, dates, gifts and unexpected expenses can make you start asking yourself, “Am I dating or am I doing financial management?” 😂
Of course, not every relationship requires expensive dates or constant spending. Sometimes, just spending time together, having a conversation or checking up on each other is enough. But as a student, even those simple things have to fit into your budget.
Then there is the biggest problem: relationship drama.
Nothing can ruin your concentration faster than being upset with someone you care about. You could be sitting in class with your lecturer talking about something important, but your mind is somewhere else thinking, “Why did they leave me on read?” 😭
You tell yourself you're going to focus on school, but your phone keeps distracting you.
And when the relationship isn't going well, it can become even harder. Arguments, misunderstandings, jealousy and heartbreak can affect your mood and sometimes even your academic performance.
That's why I think being a student with a love life requires balance.
Love can be an important part of your life, but it shouldn't completely become your life.
You still need your goals. You still need your friends. You still need time for yourself. Most importantly, you still need to remember why you are in school in the first place.
It's easy to get so caught up in someone that you forget about yourself. You stop studying because you're talking all night. You spend money you don't really have because you want to impress someone. You become so focused on the relationship that your personal goals start taking a back seat.
And honestly, that's not the kind of balance anyone wants.
Being in love while you're in school doesn't mean you have to choose between your relationship and your future. You can care about someone and still care about yourself. You can have a relationship and still chase your goals.
At the end of the day, school, love and everything in between are all part of growing up.
You are learning how to study, how to manage money, how to make friends, how to deal with heartbreak, how to communicate and, most importantly, how to understand yourself.
Maybe that's what being a student is really about—not having everything figured out, but learning how to handle everything life keeps throwing at you.
Because between the lectures, deadlines, bills, friendships, feelings and occasional heartbreaks, we're all just trying to survive.
And somehow, we're still expected to pass our exams. 😭❤️
