THE TWO HUNGRY MEN
story

THE TWO HUNGRY MEN

There lived in one small village two poor men named Musa and Daniel in green hills. They were very close friends who had been fighting side by side for many years. When they did have work, they worked hard, but at times they were barely able to feed themselves.

Musa and Daniel were strolling on an old dusty road one night in search of job. They had gone without food since the morning and were weak from hunger.

I don't know how much longer I can go on, my friend,” said Musa, gesturing to his stomach. I'm so hungry.

Daniel sighed. “Yes, I am hungry too, but we should continue walking; maybe we will find someone that might need our help.

After a while they saw a small house next to the road. An aging farm man was having difficulty in pushing a sack of maize into his home.

“Good evening, sir,” Daniel greeted him. “Can we help you?”

The farmer smiled. Sure, let me carry this bag in.

The two men picked up the heavy bag and rushed it into the house. The farmer was happy about their work.

You've been working hard,” he said. “What can I do for you?”

Musa looked at Daniel. Both men were about to eat.

Musa was quite honest, “We are very hungry.” We would be grateful if you had any food you can give us.”

The farmer said yes and gave them a big bowl of rice and beans. The room was filled with the sweet fragrance.

While Musa and Daniel were about to eat, Musa saw that only one person could eat.

“Daniel, it is good for you to eat, Musa said. You are making more efforts than I.

Daniel shook his head, and his eyes narrowed. “No Musa, eat, you look weaker than me.”

They continued arguing until the farmer returned.

What is the issue?” he questioned.

Daniel explained that they were both hungry, but not enough food for them both.

The farmer smiled. He went back into his store room, and brought out a second bowl of food.

Both of you have served this food, he said. “No one is to be hungry, while anyone else has surplus.

The men expressed their gratitude and then they all sat down together. Their eating was leisurely and they savored every bite. The farmer gave them a resting place for the night after they ate.

He gave them job on his farm on the next morning. Musa and Daniel had been working diligently for quite a few weeks. The farmer gave them good wages, and taught them how to plant their fields.

After all these months the two became successful farmers themselves. They were never forgotten the kindness of the old farmer.

They fed the hungry travellers when they met on the way.

“Hunger wasn’t what it is now,” Musa would say. “That's why if somebody is hungry, we should not neglect them.”

“You can make all the difference in a person's life with a bit of kindness” Daniel would say with a smile.

The two friends lived happily from that day on, they never forgot that sharing is better than keeping all to themselves.
