How to Comprehend Temptation and Actively Combating

HOW TO HANDLE TEMPTATION

Comprehending temptation and actively combating it with divine assistance is the sole method to maintain an advantage against the foe. Experiencing temptation is a normal aspect of existence; even Jesus faced it. The Holy Spirit guided Him into the desert to confront the devil for forty days and nights (Luke 4:1–13). Additionally, Hebrews explains that Jesus serves as our high priest because He encountered temptation in every manner similar to us, yet He remained sinless (Hebrews 4:15). Although He faced temptation, He successfully withstood it, and we can do the same.

While instructing His disciples on how to pray, Jesus advised them to request that they do not fall into temptation (Matthew 6:13). It is important to note that He did not suggest praying to avoid being tempted but instead to avoid entering temptation. I’ve heard individuals say, “Such-and-such person succumbed to adultery,” but that individual did not just accidentally “fall” into sexual immorality; they made that choice gradually. Manipulation and deceit are significant adversaries, but wisdom, caution, insight, and comprehension are even more powerful and can prevail against these foes if we heed their guidance.

Many of us have likely experienced unfavorable consequences in some aspects of our lives, leading us to ponder, “How did I arrive at this point?” We may have been so misled that we failed to see the indicators steering us towards a negative path. Even if we noticed them, we might not have listened to wisdom. Frequently, we permit intense emotions to overshadow everything we understand, but we must own our sinful behaviors; otherwise, we will remain trapped by them.

The enemy frequently attempts to persuade us that we cannot resist the urge to sin. We must never allow him to succeed in this claim, as we certainly can withstand temptation. God has assured us that He will not permit us to face more than we can handle. With each temptation, He will “provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). Do not fear that you are incapable of resisting temptation, yet refrain from the error of believing you are so strong that you cannot be tempted. The Bible warns that “anyone who thinks he stands [who is confident in his stability] should be wary lest he falls [into sin]” (1 Corinthians 10:12). Without God, we can accomplish nothing (John 15:5), but with Him, we can achieve anything (Philippians 4:13). In our human strength, numerous challenges seem impossible, “but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). Always, always, always trust in and depend on God because He is your source of strength and empowers you to resist sin.

Adultery represents a wrongdoing that can often lead to enduring adverse consequences. It can occur in an instant, yet its impact may persist for many years. Wisdom consistently considers the consequences of our decisions and poses the question, “Will I be content with the choices I make today in the future?” Wisdom suggests that individuals who yield to allure or sexual desire will eventually reflect and say, “How I despised guidance! How I ignored correction. I refused to listen to my mentors or pay attention to my teachers. Consequently, I quickly fell into significant trouble” (12–14). They will experience regret, but by the time this realization occurs, it will already be too late.
