The door at 7:17: 2

Maya couldn't move.

Her eyes remained fixed on the photograph.

The girl beside her mother had Maya's face.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly the same.

Same eyes. Same nose. Same small mark beneath her left eyebrow.

Even the necklace was identical.

Maya slowly touched the necklace around her own neck.

"That's impossible."

Her mother didn't answer.

"Mom."

Silence.

"Who was she?"

Her mother finally looked at her.

"Her name was Mara."

Maya frowned.

"Mara?"

Her mother nodded.

"You were born seven minutes apart."

Maya's stomach tightened.

"You told me I was an only child."

"I know."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Her mother looked toward the window.

"Because I wanted you to forget."

A loud knock came from the front door.

Both of them froze.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Maya's mother immediately stood up.

"Don't move."

She walked toward the door.

Another knock.

This time, Maya heard a voice.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Her mother's face lost all color.

Maya whispered, "Who is that?"

Her mother didn't answer.

Instead, she grabbed Maya's hand and pulled her toward the kitchen.

"We're leaving through the back."

"Why?"

"Because whoever is outside shouldn't know you're alive."

Maya stopped.

"Alive?"

Her mother stared at her.

Then the lights went out.

The digital clock on the kitchen wall flickered.

7:17.

Maya heard a soft sound behind her.

A whisper.

"Maya."

She turned.

Nobody was there.

Then the photograph slipped from her hand.

It landed face-up on the floor.

Except the photograph had changed.

There were no longer three people standing in it.

There were four.

Maya's mother.

Mara.

A teenage boy Maya had never seen before.

And Maya herself.

But Maya hadn't been in the original photograph.

Her mother stared at it in horror.

"He's back."

Maya looked at her.

"Who?"

Before her mother could answer, the back door slowly opened.

A figure stood outside.

A teenage girl.

Mara.

She smiled.

"Hello, sister."Maya couldn't breathe.

She stared at the girl standing in the doorway.

Same face.

Same dark eyes.

Same small mark beneath her left eyebrow.

Even the necklace around her neck was identical.

Maya instinctively touched her own necklace.

“Who are you?”

The girl smiled faintly.

“You already know.”

Maya's mother rushed forward and slammed the door shut.

“Get away from my daughter!”

Silence followed.

Then three knocks came from the other side.

Slow.

Calm.

Three knocks.

Maya's mother grabbed her arm.

“We're leaving.”

“Mom, stop!”

Maya pulled away.

“You said she died.”

Her mother froze.

“I know what I said.”

“You lied.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From her?”

Maya pointed toward the door.

Her mother looked terrified.

“Not from her.”

A fourth knock sounded.

“From what happens when you find out the truth.”

The lights flickered.

Then the digital clock on the kitchen wall changed.

7:17.

Maya looked at it.

The numbers remained frozen.

7:17.

Suddenly, something slid underneath the front door.

A photograph.

Maya picked it up.

It showed the school before the fire.

Students stood outside Room 14.

Her mother was there.

Mara was there.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

One new message.

Unknown Number.

Maya opened it. There was only one sentence.

Room 14 isn't where your sister died.

Another message appeared. It's where she was born.
