THE DAY I CHOSE TO RISE
poem

THE DAY I CHOSE TO RISE

One day I was very tired,

In a time when all hopes seemed to be dead and dying.

I had wounds I could not account for,

Smiled through the tears, and danced through the pain.

I had landed on my face so many times that I couldn't count,

Raced all hills and challenged all doubts.

The road was rough and long were the nights,

But there was a song in me somewhere.

I gazed at the scars and spoke quietly, “I’m still here.”

Although I was filled with terror.

I might have remained in the realm of sadness,

There was something in me calling me home.

So I collected my courage little by little,

And chose my future path to brightly shine.

I wiped my tears, and lifted my head,

Declining to be in the dark of fear.

The past hurt me, but it couldn't hurt for long,

The person I would grow into over the years.

The mistakes I made were lessons that I could relate to,

And his hope lay in my future tomorrow.

So I took this day to get up and,

To chase my dreams beneath open skies.

Not because life had suddenly become easy,

So, however, I could never give up without being bound forever.

I rose with faith and I rose with grace,

I was up and on my feet, determined to find my place.

Although there may be tests ahead,

I'm aware that I can get up from every ache.
