THE GIRL WHO KNEW MY SECRET

Seventeen-year-old Amara had one rule: never tell anyone what happened that summer. It was the one secret she had promised herself would disappear with time. Nobody knew about the abandoned house near the beach, the missing diary, or the strange night when four friends had sworn never to speak about what they saw. For two years, Amara had kept her promise. Then, on a Monday morning, she found a white envelope inside her school locker. There was no name on it. Inside was a photograph. It showed Amara and her three closest friends standing outside the abandoned house two years earlier. Amara's hands began to shake. Someone had taken the picture that night, but they had always believed there was nobody else there. On the back, someone had written, “You forgot one person.” Amara immediately found her friends. Kemi, David, and Tolu all denied knowing anything about the photograph. “Maybe somebody is trying to scare us,” David said. But Kemi looked nervous. “We should just throw it away,” she whispered. Amara stared at her. “Why are you so scared?” Kemi didn't answer. That afternoon, another envelope appeared. This time, there was a second photograph. It showed the four friends running away from the abandoned house. In the corner of the picture was a girl standing by the window. Her face was hidden by her hair. Underneath the photograph was another message: “You left me behind.” Amara's stomach tightened. She recognized the jacket the girl was wearing. It belonged to Kemi. That evening, Amara went to Kemi's house. “Tell me the truth,” she said. Kemi finally broke down and admitted there had been a fifth person that night. Her name was Sade, a girl from their class who had followed them to the house because she wanted to be part of their group. Something happened inside the house, and Sade had disappeared before the others ran away. They were terrified and promised never to tell anyone. “We thought she went home,” Kemi whispered. “But the next day, she wasn't at school. Her family moved away shortly afterward.” Amara felt betrayed. “And you never told me?” Kemi shook her head. “We were scared.” The next morning, Sade walked into their classroom. Amara couldn't breathe. She was older-looking, calmer, but unmistakably the girl from the photograph. Sade placed a notebook on Amara's desk. “You all forgot something,” she said. “I didn't.” Amara opened it. Every page contained details from that night—things only the five of them could have known. “Why are you doing this?” Amara asked. Sade smiled sadly. “Because I spent two years being called a liar.” She explained that after leaving the house, she had told the truth, but nobody believed her. Her family eventually moved away, and she had spent years trying to prove what happened. The abandoned house had contained evidence of a secret scheme involving stolen school records and money, and the four friends had accidentally discovered it that night. Sade had kept the notebook because it contained everything they had seen. Now she wanted the truth exposed. Amara looked at her friends. David finally lowered his head. “She's telling the truth.” Tolu nodded. Kemi began crying. Together
