Every True Calling Begins With an Encounter With God

All great vocations start with a meeting with God. It is common for God to show Himself to a person before He gives him a mission; and then it is His will to lead him in a new direction. A true calling is not a profession, a dream or a trend. It's all about understanding what God created you to do and then being willing to do it.

In the Bible, we can see people that had changed their lives after they met with God. The burning bush was God's way of communicating with Moses and, as the result of that encounter, Moses was transformed from a shepherd in the wilderness to a leader who would free Israel from Egypt. When Isaiah saw God in the temple, he asked, “Here am I! Send me.” His meeting led him to a better knowledge of God and the conviction of his mission.

But this can be the same for us today in our lives. God sometimes lets us have moments when he awakens something within us. It can occur when we pray, worship, experience a challenging time, complete a Bible study, or even in a quiet moment when we suddenly think, "I want my life to have more meaning than just that. Purpose can be the beginning of that moment.

Meeting God will not make things easy. In fact, you may find that you encounter situations that you have never thought of when you discover your calling. Moses faced Pharaoh. David faced opposition. The disciples were persecuted. They went on, though, for their task was more important than their ease.

There are lots of people that have been asking themselves that question for years, “what am i supposed to do with a life?”. They look to money, education, relationships, popularity and possessions for answers. But these things can be of value, but they can also not take the place of divine direction. As you come to know God you realize that is not just a matter of what you can get, it is also about what you can give.

Your callings may not look like a great calling to some people. God has placed you in the position to teach, serve, encourage, build, create, lead, care for others, or make a quiet difference. The important part is to be faithful not how people measure your assignment.

At other times you will wonder what you're doing here. You might feel unqualified, forgotten or afraid. Keep in mind that God doesn't always call the qualified, He qualifies the ones He calls. No-one is beyond His control. Limited means things that you can't do, but they do not stop God's purpose.

When you meet with God, your conception of yourself changes. You start to see that your life wasn't a coincidence. Your experiences and gifts can be part of a larger story, as can opportunities and some of your struggles.

Therefore, don't hurry to encounter God while you're looking for your purpose. Seek Him first. Pray. Study His Word. Listen. Be ready to follow through, even when you don't know what will come next.

Often, it is not where you're going, but what you find along the way, that will be the best thing that ever happened to you. It starts with God finding us.

All genuine callings start with an encounter with God; and when you encounter God, your life could never be the same again.
