FAMILY UNDER STRESS
Unluckily, the family is changing in the modern world, not for the better. India, where a wife may live with her husband's family and work in the home under the direction of her in-laws, provides an example. But it's not unusual for Indian women to look for work outside the home nowadays. Nonetheless, it seems that they are still expected to perform their conventional home chores. In several countries, the issue that is brought up is, "How much housework should a woman who works outside the home be required to perform in comparison to other family members?"
Extended family connections are a tradition in Oriental cultures. However, the traditional extended family is becoming less important as a result of economic issues and the influence of Western style individualism. Therefore, a lot of people see caring for elderly relatives as a burden rather than a duty or a privilege. Some elderly parents are subjected to maltreatment. Neglect and maltreatment of the elderly are prevalent in several nations today.
Divorce is becoming more prevalent. By the start of the last decade of the 20th century, Spain's divorce rate had increased to one out of every eight marriages, a significant increase from one out of every 100 marriages 25 years previously. The number of single-parent households in Britain has increased dramatically, with the nation having the highest divorce rate in Europe, with 4 out of 10 marriages predicted to end in divorce.
In Germany, many people appear to be totally giving up on the conventional family. 31% of all German households in the 1990s had just two people, and 35% had just one. Like the French, fewer people are getting married, and those who do are divorcing sooner and more frequently than in the past. Without the duties of marriage, more people choose to cohabitate. Similar tendencies may be seen all over the world.
What about youngsters? In the United States and other countries, a growing number of kids are born to teenage girls outside of marriage. A lot of young women have multiple kids by various males. According to stories from across the world, millions of street kids are wandering the streets; a large number are either fleeing abusive houses or are expelled from families that can no longer afford to support them.
Indeed, the family is in jeopardy. Many families lose their happiness because of what has already been stated, as well as teenage disobedience, child abuse, spousal violence, alcoholism, and other heartbreaking problems. The family is not at all a sanctuary for many adults and children.
Why is there a family issue? The entrance of women into the workplace is sometimes attributed to the current family crisis. Today's moral breakdown is brought up by some. Additional reasons are also mentioned. When a well-known lawyer wrote, "In the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, betrayers, head strong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God" (2 Timothy 3:1-4), he predicted that the family would experience many challenges. Who would question the current fulfillment of these statements? Is it surprising that a large number of families are struggling in a environment like this one?
