THE MESSAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
At exactly 11:47 p.m., my phone rang. When I checked it, I saw a message from an unknown number. It had only six words.
"I know your secret. Run now."
I sat up on my bed. My heart started beating fast. I looked around my room, but everything seemed normal. I read the message again, hoping I had read it wrong.
Before I could reply, another message came in.
"Don't look outside your window."
My hands began to shake.
Those words made me want to look outside even more. I slowly turned towards the window. The curtain was moving, even though my window was closed.
I quickly called the number. It rang twice before someone picked up.
"Hello?" I whispered.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke. Then I heard a low voice.
"Listen carefully. You are in danger."
"Who are you? What do you want from me?" I asked.
The person ended the call.
I jumped out of bed and locked my door. Many questions filled my head. Had someone followed me home? Was somebody watching me? What secret was the person talking about?
Suddenly, I heard a loud sound downstairs.
BANG!
I froze.
Then I heard footsteps moving slowly across the floor.
I wanted to call my parents, but they had travelled that evening. I was home with my older brother, David. I tried calling him, but his phone was switched off.
Another message came in.
"Whatever happens, don't trust David."
I stared at the screen in shock.
David was my own brother. We had grown up together. Why would a stranger tell me not to trust him?
Just then, someone knocked on my bedroom door.
"Open up," David said.
I moved away from the door. Something about his voice sounded strange.
"Open the door! I need to talk to you!" he shouted.
I said nothing.
Then he asked, "Who sent you those messages?"
My eyes widened.
How did he know about the messages?
My phone rang again.
"He knows you have seen the messages. Leave the house now!"
I could hardly breathe. I looked around my room, trying to find a way out. Then I remembered the small balcony beside my window.
I stepped outside and called our neighbour, Mr James, for help. He came out and called the police.
When the police arrived, David was standing in the living room with a bag in his hand. He looked shocked when he saw them.
They asked him what was inside the bag. He could not give a good answer, so they checked it.
Inside, they found some of my father's missing papers and money that had disappeared from our house a few days earlier.
I stood there, unable to speak.
David had been stealing from our own home and was planning to run away before anyone found out.
But there was still one question in my mind.
Who had sent me those messages?
I checked my phone and called the unknown number. This time, someone answered at once.
"Who are you?" I asked.
A familiar voice replied.
"It's me, Grace, your neighbour's daughter."
I was shocked. Grace told me that she had seen David carrying the bag earlier that evening. When she saw him come back secretly, she became worried and decided to warn me.
She was afraid to come to the house herself, so she used an unknown number to send me the messages.
I thanked her for helping me.
That night changed the way I saw the people around me. I had always thought that the people closest to us were the ones we could trust the most.
But I was wrong.
I learned that danger does not always come from strangers. Sometimes, it can come from someone we know very well.
That night, I received a message that changed everything. And I would never forget it.
