The Cross-Reference

It's raining hard in Edinburgh — a sharper, colder kind of rain than the soft mist back in Leeds. Maya is up on scaffolding inside the huge library at the estate, carefully applying finish to the woodwork, cold and stiff after hours in the same position.

She hears the big library doors creak open and assumes it's just estate staff, so without turning around, she calls out instructions about firewood and tea. But the voice that answers isn't the estate manager — it's Julian.

She freezes. When she turns around, there he is, standing below her on the library floor — soaked through, exhausted, clearly having traveled a long way, but standing steady anyway. He explains, in his usual quietly precise way, that he came because he had something he couldn't send in the mail.

Maya climbs down to him, stunned that he actually traveled all the way to Scotland in terrible weather just to see her. He confirms the distance almost like he's reciting a fact — over four hundred miles, with a delayed train along the way — but tells her the distance doesn't matter to him.

Then he pulls out the handmade leather notebook he spent three nights making — the one where he documented their entire relationship like an archival record. He doesn't give a big speech. He just hands it to her and explains simply that it's an index of everything they've built together, and everything he never said before she left.

As Maya flips through it, she sees exactly what he wrote — all the small dated entries about their time together: their conversations, the coffee, the arguments, the quiet moments, all recorded in his neat, careful handwriting. By the time she reaches the final page, she's emotional. She reads his closing lines — that their relationship isn't actually broken, just pushed in an unfamiliar direction, and that he's completely and permanently in love with her, no conditions attached.

She looks up at him, crying a little, and calls him an idiot — in an affectionate way — for literally turning their relationship into a bound book. Julian gently corrects her, calling it a "finding aid," explaining that it exists so that no matter how far apart they are or how hard things get, there's always a record of what they mean to each other — nothing gets lost.

He steps closer and takes her hand. Then he says the most important thing in the whole book out loud, in his own words: he doesn't need her to stay in one place to feel secure, and he doesn't need her to prove she's strong by doing everything completely alone. He just wants to be allowed to be part of her life — part of the structure she's building, instead of standing outside of it.

Maya sets the notebook down, closes the distance between them, and hugs him tightly, pressing her face into his wet coat, breathing in the familiar smell of him. He wraps his arms around her, holding her close in the quiet, empty library.

Then, softly, she tells him the practical part — that her work at the estate finishes in six weeks, and after that, she's coming home to Kirkgate, back to her shop, back to him. Julian, ever the meticulous one, tells her he already knows — he's already marked the date on his calendar.
