I could treat you better

I could treat you better.

Uncle Nathaniel was bringing a woman home today, a fiancée to be precise, another one after his last divorce. He was going to get married again.

I was happy for him and all, but I honestly wanted to stay in my room. I couldn't care less about what his new wife looked like this time. The last one was light-skinned, kind of chubby and feisty. I didn't really like her.

I walked down the stairs in slow, measured steps, my headphones blaring loud music in my ears, my eyes glued to my phone.

The smell of Afang and egusi soup hit my nose as I walked past the kitchen. My mother was being dramatic, as usual. She had our caregiver make two different soups because we were expecting two visitors.

I took off my headphones and strolled deeper into the living room. I could hear my dad's voice and Uncle Nathaniel's rich laughter vibrating through the walls.

As soon as we saw each other, he gave me a smirk and I walked toward him with a big smile. I had missed him. He was actually my favorite. We had always been tight, even closer than I was with my dad.

We fell into a warm hug, and he pulled away dramatically.

"Christopher Udoette, are those biceps I feel?" he asked playfully, hitting my arm.

"Have you been working out?"

Dad rolled his eyes good-naturedly, watching the both of us.

"I have, uncle. Every day," I replied, pressing my lips into a thin line to stop myself from smiling at his expression.

"Hmm, you're a big boy now. Women will start coming, you know, when you finally get into college and stuff like that," he teased.

"Do not fill his head with women talk. He'll focus on his books when he gets admission into school, Nathan," Dad protested, rolling his eyes.

"Ease up, brother. Whether you like it or not, women will still come. Christopher is all that, oh," Uncle Nathaniel said with a laugh. I smiled and shook my head at him.

I wasn't really one to care about women, not even back in secondary school. I had a lot of admirers, and I'd been with a few of them, but I never really felt a spark. I still don't.

I looked around before turning back to Uncle Nathaniel, who was still talking with my father about football or something.

"Uncle, where's your fiancée?"

"Oh, she was having a chat with your mum. You know women and all."

Just then, Mum walked in laughing, and I heard a soft laughter following behind her, and the soft clicking of hills.

I saw her legs first. She wore red stiletto heels, then I noticed the body-hugging red gown that clung to her perfectly. Then I saw her face. She had her braids packed up in a bun.

I had seen a lot of girls and women, but this one in particular captivated me more than anything else.
