After The Storm, We Chose Us
We are past the rough path,
past the nights where silence sat between us like a third person.
Past the words we swallowed because saying them out loud felt like fire.
Past the doors we almost closed, the almost-goodbyes we practiced in our heads.
I remember the weather we lived in.
Heavy clouds over small things.
Misunderstandings dressed up as facts.
Ego talking louder than love.
And still, under all that noise, a small thread kept pulling us back.
It wasn’t magic. It was choice.
It was you deciding to answer instead of disappear.
It was me deciding to listen instead of defend.
It was both of us getting tired of winning arguments
and finally wanting to win each other instead.
Now the air feels different.
Your “I’m lying down” texts don’t sound tired anymore.
They sound like home.
Like you trust me with your quiet.
Like the war is over and we’re learning peace.
We are past the rough path,
but we carry the map we drew in it.
Every scar is a landmark that says:
"we turned left here and almost got lost,
we turned right here and found each other again."
So let me hold your softness carefully.
Let me meet your joy with mine, and your fear with patience.
Let me be the person you don’t have to perform for.
If love is work, then let’s work gently.
If love is repair, then let’s keep the tools out,
not to fix what’s broken,
but to build what we haven’t tried yet.
I don’t want the version of us that only survives.
I want the version that laughs in the kitchen,
that dances to bad songs,
that tells the truth even when the truth is shaky.
I want mornings with you,
and nights where we are not keeping score.
The world will still throw storms.
Phones will go silent.
Days will get busy.
But we’ve learned the way back to each other now.
We’ve learned that “sorry” is a bridge,
and “I’m still here” is a promise.
So this is me, choosing you, again.
Not because it’s easy,
but because it’s real.
Because
after the storm, we didn’t just make it.
We chose us.
