THE DAY I DISCOVERED MY BEST FRIEND'S SECRET
The person I trusted most was hiding something from me. I never knew that one small lie could change our friendship forever.
My name is David, and Michael had been my best friend since we were young. We shared our food, played football together, and told each other almost everything. I believed there was nothing he could hide from me.
But I was wrong.
It all started on a Monday morning when Michael came to school looking worried. He hardly spoke to anyone, and whenever I asked him what was wrong, he said he was fine.
At first, I believed him. But after a few days, I noticed that he was always leaving school in a hurry. Sometimes, he would answer a phone call and walk away from me to talk.
Something was clearly wrong.
One afternoon, I decided to follow him after school. I know it was not the right thing to do, but I was worried about my friend.
He walked past the football field, crossed the main road, and stopped in front of an old building. I hid behind a nearby wall and watched him knock on the door.
A woman opened it.
The moment Michael saw her, he began to cry.
I was shocked. I had never seen him cry before.
Then the woman hugged him and said something I could barely hear.
"You should tell your friend the truth before it is too late."
My heart started beating fast.
What truth? And why had Michael never told me about this woman?
Before I could move closer, Michael turned around and walked away. I quickly left before he could see me.
The next morning, I went to school early and waited for him.
"Michael, I need to ask you something," I said.
He looked at me. "What is it?"
"Where do you go every afternoon?"
His face changed.
"Why are you asking me that?"
"Because you are my best friend, and I know something is wrong."
He looked away and said nothing.
I became angry. "After everything we have shared, you cannot even tell me what is happening?"
Michael stood up and walked away.
For the rest of the day, we did not speak.
That evening, I received a message from an unknown number.
It read, "If you want to know the truth about Michael, come to the old building tomorrow."
I stared at my phone in fear and confusion. Who was sending me these messages? And how did they know what I had seen?
The next day, I went to the building.
The same woman opened the door. She looked at me for a few seconds before asking, "Are you David?"
I nodded.
She led me inside and asked me to sit down. Then she brought out an old photograph.
My eyes widened.
The picture showed Michael as a little boy standing beside a woman I had never seen before.
"Who is she?" I asked.
The woman took a deep breath.
"She is Michael's mother. He has been trying to find her for years."
I could not believe what I was hearing.
Michael had always told me that his mother lived far away and that he hardly remembered her. I never knew he was searching for her.
The woman explained that Michael had finally found her but was afraid to tell me because he did not know how I would react. He had spent years hiding his sadness behind a smile.
Suddenly, I felt ashamed of myself. I had followed him and questioned him without giving him a chance to explain.
Just then, the door opened.
Michael walked in and stopped when he saw me.
"David? What are you doing here?"
I stood up.
"I'm sorry, Michael. I should have talked to you instead of following you."
He looked down, then slowly smiled.
"I wanted to tell you," he said. "I just didn't know how."
I walked towards him and gave him a hug.
"You don't have to face everything alone," I told him.
For the first time in days, Michael smiled like his old self.
That day taught me that even the closest friends can have secrets. Sometimes, people stay quiet not because they do not trust us, but because they are afraid of being hurt.
I also learned that friendship is not about knowing every secret. It is about being there when someone is ready to share the truth.
I went looking for a secret, but what I found was a friend who needed me more than ever.
