Misdirection

At 8:17 p.m. on a rainy Tuesday, James Carter was found dead inside his locked study.

There were no signs that anyone had forced their way in. His phone was still on the desk, his wallet had not been touched, and the only thing that seemed out of place was a glass of water sitting beside his laptop.

Detective Emily Brooks showed up twenty minutes later.

James was a well-respected businessman, but three people had obvious reasons to want him dead: his business partner, William; his younger brother, Michael; and his personal assistant, Sarah.

William said that he and James had argued that afternoon because some company money had gone missing.

Michael said that James had threatened to cut him out of the family business.

Sarah said that James had fired her that morning.

All three of them had been in the building that evening.

The whole situation seemed almost too convenient.

Then Emily noticed something strange.

James's laptop was open to a blank document. Underneath it was one sentence:

“If you're reading this, don't trust the person who helps you most.”

Emily immediately started looking closely at William.

William had been almost suspiciously helpful. He handed over his phone, answered every question, and even helped the investigators piece together James's final hours.

Still, the evidence against him was not strong enough.

Then Sarah came to Emily with a security recording.

“I found this in the backup folder,” she said.

The footage showed William walking into James's office at 6:42 p.m. William admitted it right away.

“I went in there to confront him,” he said. “But I left before seven.”

At first, the footage seemed to back him up.

Then Emily noticed something that did not make sense.

The clock in the recording was exactly six minutes slow.

William had not left before seven.

He had left at 7:06.

That changed the entire timeline.

Emily questioned Michael again, and his alibi fell apart within minutes.

But before she could arrest him, Sarah stepped in.

“I know who did it.”

She pointed straight at William.

“He killed James.”William just stared at her.

Then Emily noticed that Sarah's hands were shaking. She was not shaking because she was scared.

She was shaking because she was excited.

Emily went back to the study.

The glass of water caught her attention.

James almost never drank water during meetings. He often complained that it made him leave his desk too often.

Emily checked the kitchen records.

The glass had been washed before James's final meeting.

Someone had placed it there afterward on purpose.

That was when Emily finally understood what had happened.

Sarah had been James's assistant for four years. She knew his habits, his passwords, his schedule, and the security system.

More importantly, she knew exactly how the investigation would start.

She had planted evidence to make William look guilty.

She had pushed Michael into acting suspiciously.

She had even pretended to discover the security footage.

Sarah had not been helping with the investigation.

She had been controlling it from the beginning.

When Emily confronted her, Sarah smiled.

“You were supposed to arrest William.”

“No,” Emily said. “You were supposed to make me think I had figured everything out.”

The blank document on James's laptop had been created hours before he died.

But James had not written the sentence.

Sarah had written it herself.

She had missed one important detail.

James's computer automatically saved the author's username every time someone created a document.

Without realizing it, Sarah had left her own name behind.

Sarah was arrested that night.

The most disturbing part of the case was not just that she had planned the murder.

She had planned the investigation too.
