PHILEMON THE HUNTER
story

PHILEMON THE HUNTER

There was once a young man in a small village in the middle of thick forests and green hills named Philemon. From his childhood Philemon had always been mesmerized by the forest. He loved the birds' sounds, the fresh morning breeze, and the footprints of animals on the soft ground. As he aged he became one of the best hunters in the village.

Philemon was not only courageous but patient as well. He knew that a good hunter didn't just run down animals. He observed them, he heard and he took care of the forest. His father had taught him never to kill unnecessarily and to only take what he needed.

One morning, before the sun came up, Philemon got up early and went out to hunt. He brought his hunting gear, some food and one bottle of water. His mother had cautioned him before he left, “Beware, my son, as beautiful as the forest is, it can also be dangerous.”

“Well, I will be careful, Mother,” Philemon replied smiling.

He stepped into the woods stealthily. Some hours later, he saw fresh tracks heading towards the stream. He watched them closely and he noticed that there was a big antelope drinking water. Philemon lifted his weapon, but as he about to do so, he noticed something peculiar.

The antelope was standing near another small animal, which seemed to be injured. Philemon knew that the big animal was guarding it. He released his gun. His heart was telling him it was not the time to hunt.

Turning around, he heard a frightening roar from behind him. There was a wild leopard between him and the road to their home.

Philemon remained calm. He walked slowly backwards after the leopard, rather than running. He recalled his father's words: “Think before you act, danger comes and fear can make you careless.

Suddenly the leopard approached him. Philemon ascended a tree not far away and waited for him. It stayed down for a while and then slowly vanished into the woods.

Once Philemon could see that the danger was over he sat down and went on his way. As he walked home, he found a little boy lost in the woods. The boy was frightened and crying.

Don't be afraid,” replied Philemon. I'll take you home.

He led the boy carefully through the woods, knowing the way and where the landmarks were. They arrived in the village by the time it was time for the sun to set. Parents of the boy were delighted to have their little boy alive and safe.

The people of the village surrounded Philemon that night. They commended him not for the capture, but for his courage, wisdom and compassion.

From then on Philemon was no longer just a big hunter, but a defender of the forest and the people living within it. He found that it was not quantity of animals killed that defined a hunter's strength but his wise and responsible care of them.

Whenever Philemon went out into the woods, one lesson he never forgot: The greatest hunter isn't the one that defeats nature, but the one who masters it and respects it.
