You Don't Need to Have Your Whole Life Figured Out

For a while, I felt like I needed to have my life figured out as quickly as possible.

I thought I needed to know exactly where I was going, what I wanted to do, how I would make money, what kind of business I should start, and generally have a clear direction for everything. I felt that if I could figure everything out early enough, I would be able to avoid making mistakes.

Looking back, I realize that I was putting unnecessary pressure on myself.

The Pressure to Have Everything Figured Out

There is this idea that by a certain age, you should already know what you are doing with your life.

You should know exactly what you want. You should be making progress that other people can see.

Sometimes, when you look around and see other people seemingly achieving these things, it can make you question yourself.

You start wondering, “Am I behind?”

I have felt that way before, especially when it came to money and business. I thought I needed to have everything figured out immediately because I didn't want to make the wrong decisions.

But life doesn't really work that way.

Social Media Makes It Worse

I also think social media can make this pressure much stronger.

Every day, we see people posting their achievements, businesses, money, relationships, travels and seemingly perfect lives. It can easily make you feel like everyone else is moving forward while you are standing still.

But we have to remember that social media is often a highlight reel.

People can exaggerate their lives. Some people show only the best parts, while leaving out the struggles, failures and uncertainty behind the scenes.

Comparing your real life to someone else's carefully selected posts is not a fair comparison.

You don't know the complete story behind what you are seeing.

Maybe We Are Looking at Life the Wrong Way

I've started to think about life differently.

Having your life together doesn't necessarily mean knowing exactly where you will be five or ten years from now.

To me, it means knowing what phase of life you are currently in and understanding what you need to do, learn and improve during that phase.

Maybe your current phase is about education.

Maybe it is about learning a skill.

Maybe it is about building your finances.

Maybe it is about discovering yourself.

Maybe it is simply about becoming more disciplined and preparing for the opportunities that will come later.

Whatever the phase is, you don't have to rush through it just because someone else seems to be in a different place.

Life Is Like a Book

I like to think of life as a book.

You don't read a book and complain that you don't know what happens in Chapter 10 while you're still on Chapter 3. You simply read the chapter you are currently in and understand what is happening there.

Life can be similar.

You don't need to know everything that will happen in your future right now.

You need to know what chapter you're in.

Then, you work on the things required for that chapter.

You learn.

You make mistakes.

You gain experience.

You grow.

Eventually, you move into another chapter, and the things you learned before become useful in the next one.

There Is No Need to Rush Your Story

I am learning that being uncertain about the future doesn't mean I am failing.

It simply means I am still learning.

I don't need to have my whole life figured out right now. I need to focus on where I am, make the most of this stage and prepare myself for the next one.

And maybe that's something many of us need to remember.

Our lives are not competitions.

Someone else's Chapter 8 does not mean your Chapter 4 is a failure.

You just need to know what chapter you're in, do what is required of you there, and learn as much as you can.

The next chapter will come when it is time.

And when it does, you'll be better prepared because you took the time to grow in the chapter you were already in.

You don't need to have your whole life figured out. You just need to understand the chapter you're in and be willing to learn from it.
