When Privacy Turns Into a Nightmare

No one deserves to have their privacy violated. For everyone, there are times, talks, snapshots, and memories that we think we are keeping to ourselves. In today’s digital world, however, keeping something private has become more difficult than ever. One photo, video, message or secret can be spread to thousands of people in just minutes. A private moment can quickly turn to a public nightmare.

Often the risk starts with being too trusting. A person might post a personal photo or video with a partner or close friend, thinking that this person will honor his or her privacy. Unfortunately, the relationship sometimes does not go well and the emotions of anger, jealousy or revenge can cause people to use what was once kept confidential in an improper way.

The repercussions of private content leaking online can be devastating. The victim may be embarrassed, anxious, depressed, have hurt relationships or have challenges at work or school. If the post has been deleted, it might be on another phone, website or social media already. The internet can make a private mistake appear permanent.

The response of the society is one of the most distressing aspects of it. Some people blame, mock or shame the victim rather than supporting them. They might question why the person trusted someone or why they did the content in the first place. However, the relatedness to expose private information without consent is the duty of the person who shared it. Trust should never be used as a weapon.

The lesson is serious and to do with digital responsibility. Users need to be cautious in their online search and with whom to share personal data. Some risks can be mitigated by using strong passwords, two-factor authentication, privacy settings, and secure devices. But technology does not take the place of good judgment and respect for others.

Parents and schools too have a significant role. Children and young people should learn that it is harmful to share another person's photograph, video or message without permission. They should become familiar with consent, digital footprints, cyberbullying, and being responsible on line.

The very first thing for someone who is the victim of a violation of their privacy should be to get assistance and not suffer in silence. Screenshots, links, usernames and messages can be saved and reported to the platform or authorities. Support can also be provided by trusted family members, friends, counsellors and/or legal representatives.

The concept of privacy must not be seen as a right that ceases to exist when it goes into the digital space. Every photo or video is a real person with feelings, dignity and a future.

The fear of losing privacy reminds us that technology affords us great power, but great power comes with great responsibility. We need to learn to respect boundaries, to protect personal information and to know that we can share something but don't always have to do so.

Ultimately, privacy is more than just a matter of concealing secrets. It is a matter of dignity, trust and control of our personal lives. The consequences of that right being breached may last much longer than the few seconds it takes to hit “send.”
