In a quiet room, a young man sits with his hands together in prayer. An open Bible lies before him, and his heart is focused on God. There is no crowd around him, no noise, and no pressure. It is simply a moment between a person and his Creator. This picture reminds us of something very important: the fear of God begins with knowing who God is and choosing to live with respect for Him.
The fear of God does not mean living every day in terror or believing that God is waiting to punish us. Instead, it means having deep respect for God, loving Him, trusting Him, and taking His word seriously. It means understanding that our choices matter and that our lives should reflect the values He teaches.
Many people think they can do whatever they want because nobody is watching. But the fear of God changes this way of thinking. It teaches us to do what is right even when nobody is around. When a person truly respects God, he begins to ask himself important questions: Is this decision right? Will this action please God? Am I treating people the way God wants me to?
This is why the young man in the picture is praying with an open Bible before him. Prayer is not only about asking God for money, success, or blessings. Prayer is also about listening, seeking direction, admitting our mistakes, and asking for wisdom. Sometimes, before making an important decision, the best thing we can do is become quiet, pray, and allow God's Word to guide our hearts.
The fear of God also teaches us obedience. It is easy to obey when everything is going well, but true faith is tested when we face difficult choices. There may be moments when lying seems easier than telling the truth, cheating seems easier than working hard, or following the crowd seems easier than standing for what is right. The fear of God gives us the courage to choose what is right even when it is difficult.
Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This teaches us that true wisdom is more than having knowledge. A person may know many things and still make terrible decisions. Real wisdom includes knowing how to use what we know in a way that is good, honest, and pleasing to God.
The fear of God also changes how we treat other people. When we understand that every person has value, we become more careful with our words and actions. We learn to forgive, show kindness, avoid unnecessary hatred, and help those who are struggling.
Most importantly, the fear of God should not push us away from Him. It should bring us closer. Just as the young man in the picture finds a quiet place to pray, we should create time to seek God, read His Word, and examine our lives.
Life will always bring difficult decisions. Friends may influence us. Society may pressure us. Our own desires may sometimes lead us in the wrong direction. But when we develop a genuine fear of God, we have a stronger foundation for making wise choices.
To fear God is to respect Him, love Him, trust Him, and allow His wisdom to guide our lives. It is not simply about being afraid of God; it is about living every day with the awareness that our lives have meaning and our choices matter.
Sometimes, the greatest wisdom begins when we become quiet, open the Bible, bow our heads, and sincerely ask, “God, show me the right way.”
