DAJIN IN THE JUNGLE

DAJIN IN THE JUNGLE

Dajin had always been fascinated by the stories his grandfather told of the jungle. Beyond the high trees and the curved rivers was a thing which few would go, he said. Wildness, trepidation, noise and discovery awaited. These tales entertained Dajin, but never did he imagine he would be inside that very jungle one day.

One Saturday morning, Dajin and his three friends decided to go out in the forest, near their village. They had water, food, small knife, torch and rope. Dajin's mother told him not to venture out too far.

“Be aware that the jungle is beautiful but it can also be dangerous,” she said.

Dajin assured her that he'd treat her well.

Initially, all was good fun. They walked under large trees, they saw colourful birds flying above them and they listened to the sounds of the insects. Even found a little stream and they stopped and drank some water.

But as they walked on they got distracted and did not realize just how far they had gone.

Then, it was dark. Then, the sky got dark.

One of his friends said we should go back.

They faced around but the road was not a familiar one. They proceeded in different directions but each one seemed to take them further into the jungle.

In fear, it started to get a hold of him.

It was getting late and they saw a strange noise in the distance. The boys froze.

“What was that?” whispered one.

When he was caught in the jungle, Dajin recalled his grandfather advising him not to panic, to stay together and search for water.

Instead of walking in a blind fashion, they decided to stay in the same location. They discovered a large tree with a space under it and they camped under it for the night.

It was around midnight when they heard footsteps outside nearby. Dajin had his breath held. Between the trees there was a large animal. Luckily, it slipped out from there without taking notice of them.

They went the following morning and followed a running stream. They walked for a good few hours, and found the stream they had stumbled upon earlier. Dajin knew that the stream could guide them towards the village.

They took heed unto it.

By the afternoon, their familiar voices were heard. Several villagers and their families were in the jungle looking for them.

Dajin ran up to his mother and hugged her tightly when he saw her.

She was angry, her tears revealing her fear.

“You warned me,” she said.

“Mama, I know.”, Dajin said. “If only I had listened.”

The boys came home safely, but Dajin had been forever changed. He came to understand that courage was not about avoiding danger. Real courage was knowing when to stop, think and make wise decisions.

Dajin would never go into the jungle without being adequately prepared and accompanied by an expert guide from then on.

When other children spoke of going into the forest, he told others his tale.

“Things in the jungle are beautiful,” he would say, “but don't underestimate it just because you think you do.

When he recalled of that terrifying night under the big tree, Dajin credited God for saving him and his friends.

He was scared of the jungle, but he had also learned one of the most important lessons in life: adventure can be exciting – but wisdom and caution can be the difference between a story and a tragedy.
