Adrian dropped me in front of my house without saying another word.
I tried several times to explain myself, but he wasn't willing to listen. I knew Adrian well enough to understand his expressions. Whenever that particular look of discontent appeared on his face, it meant he was in no mood for explanations, excuses, or conversations. The moment the car stopped, I quietly stepped out. I watched the car drive away before turning toward the house. Mama was sitting in the living room, and the moment she saw my face, her expression changed.
“What happened?” she asked.
I said nothing.
I simply walked past her and went straight to my room.
I decided to give Adrian some space. Maybe a day or two would be enough for his anger to disappear and for him to become willing to listen to me. I didn't want to keep pushing him when I already knew how he behaved whenever he was upset. But two days passed, and nothing changed. Eventually, I decided to tell my friends everything. I asked them to speak to Adrian on my behalf and help me explain that I never intended to hurt or deceive him. To my surprise, Adrian didn't seem angry when they apologized on my behalf. Instead, he asked them one question.
“Why hasn't Amara contacted me herself?”
That was when I realized something. He wasn't simply angry. He was worried. Initially, I was too afraid to see him. I kept imagining the worst possible reaction. But after thinking about it for so long, I finally summoned the courage to go to his office. My heart pounded as I walked through the door.
Adrian looked up. The moment our eyes met, I saw something I hadn't expected. His eyes were worried.
He immediately stood up and walked toward me. For a brief moment, I froze. I didn't know what he was going to do.
My mind could only form two words.
“I am”
Before I could finish, Adrian pulled me into his arms. I barely had time to process what was happening before he kissed me. This kiss felt different. It was slow and tender, almost as though he was trying to erase every trace of the distance that had existed between us. When he finally pulled away, I whispered,
“I am sorry.”
He looked at me for a moment before pointing toward the chair.
“Sit down.”
I sat quietly while Adrian took his seat opposite me.
“The only thing I'm angry about, Amara,” he began,
“is that you didn't tell me Daniel was disturbing you.”
I lowered my eyes.
“And then you went to see him without telling me. What if he had harmed you? What were you thinking?”
“I wasn't thinking about the danger,” I admitted. “I just wanted to hear what he had to say and end everything properly.”
Adrian sighed.
“Do you know where I was that day?”
I shook my head.
“I was at the same place. I was having dinner with a business partner when I saw you.”
My eyes widened.
“You saw me?”
“Yes.”
He explained that he quietly followed me and listened to the entire conversation.
“I only interfered when he kissed you,” Adrian said, his voice becoming firm. “Nobody is permitted to touch my woman.”
I couldn't help but look at him. His possessiveness was unmistakable.
“I didn't know you were there,” I said softly. “I wasn't hiding Daniel because I wanted anything from him. I just didn't want you to misunderstand the situation.”
Adrian remained silent. So I explained everything from the beginning, the messages, the things Daniel kept insisting I needed to hear, and why I eventually decided to meet him.
“I should have told you,” I admitted. “I understand that now. I'm sorry for making you worry.”
Adrian looked at me for a long moment before pulling me closer.
“I don't want to control you, Amara,” he said quietly. “I just don't want anything to happen to you.”
I wrapped my arms around him.
“I understand.”
For a while, neither of us said anything. We simply held each other. It felt as though the tension of the past few days had finally disappeared. When we finally pulled apart, Adrian's expression had softened.
“What are you doing this weekend?” he asked.
I blinked.
“This weekend?”
“Yes.”
“I don't have any plans.”
“Good.”
A small smile appeared on his face.
“I want to take you somewhere.”
“Where?”
“If I tell you, it won't be a surprise.”
I smiled.
“You and your surprises.”
He leaned closer.
“You don't like my surprises?”
“I didn't say that.”
“Then you like them?”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
I laughed softly. “Fine. I like them.”
He smiled.
“And you like me too?”
I pretended to think about it.
“I'm still considering.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Amara.”
I laughed again and rested my head briefly against his shoulder.
“Of course I like you.”
His expression softened.
“Good. I was beginning to worry.”
I eventually stood up to leave.
“I should go going”
Adrian nodded, but just as I reached the door, he called me.
“Babe.”
I turned around.
“Yes?”
He looked at me for a moment, and that familiar playful smile appeared on his face.
“Remember to wear something presentable.”
I stared at him.
"Presentable?”
“Yes.”
“For where exactly?”
“I already told you. It's a surprise.”
I folded my arms.
“You're impossible.”
“And yet you're smiling.”
I tried to hide it, but he was right.
I was smiling. After everything that had happened, I walked out of his office with a lighter heart. For two days, I had been afraid that I had created a distance between us that would be difficult to repair. But now, as I walked away, I knew one thing for certain. Adrian was still angry about what had happened. But he was also still worried about me. And somehow, that was enough to bring us back into each other's arms.
