The Bible tells us that God is a consuming fire. God is not cruel and destructive. Instead, it shows His holiness, power, purity, and righteousness. When we encounter God He will show us anything that is not in accordance with His will and it has to be taken out. His fire cleanses, purifies, changes and prepares us for Him.
Fire has the power to destroy, but it also has the power to purify. Gold is subjected to extreme heat, for instance, in order to remove impurities. God too, sometimes lets us go through a season of difficulty, not to take us out of it, but to refine us through it! Trials can be used by God to build up our faith and our character.
In the life there are days like a furnace. We pray but the answer doesn't seem to come. We do a lot of work, but things don't seem to change. We are relying on God, but it is harder. At times when it seems 'where is God'? There are times, however, when God is nearer to us than we think. God can be with us in the fire just as with the three Hebrew men, he isn't alone.
God's consuming fire also tells us of His hatred for sin. He reminds us to be holy, and to reject all that keeps us apart from Him. It is impossible to live in sin and say that we are close to God. He is challenging us in our pride, bitterness, hatred, dishonesty, selfishness, and all our bad habits that are not in line with Him.
He is working to change us, but we sometimes ask Him to change our circumstances. We ask Him to take away the fire in us, and He uses the fire to take away the fire in us. Although the experience can be unpleasant, the beauty is worth it. God can take the broken and make it whole, the pain and make it wise, the weakness and make it dependent on Him.
God's consuming fire is also a consuming passion. Filling should bring a person's heart to a point of desiring to know God, serve Him, love others and live in accord with His Word. Faith should be more than something that we show in church; it should shape our decisions, relationships, work and daily life.
Don't fear when God starts to minister to the things that need to change in your life. Give to Him. Don't deny His work in your heart, let His fire burn through.
God's intention is more powerful than the pain – the fire can be hot. It's a hard season, but they can be a season where God is preparing you to do something greater.
Keep in mind, God lets you go through the fire and He's not leaving you there alone. He walks with you, strengthens you and brings you out refined.
Burn away all things that are not His, and let His presence be always in your heart.
