Beyond the Good and the Acceptable

In life, we often measure our actions by what society considers good or acceptable. If an action produces a desirable result, it is applauded. If it falls within the boundaries of human standards or legal expectations, it is easily justified. Yet, as believers, God calls us to a much higher standard—one that goes beyond what is merely good or acceptable. He calls us to pursue that which is perfect, holy, and pleasing to Him.

The apostle Paul captures this truth in Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Notice the progression: good, acceptable, and perfect. While the first two have value, they are not the final destination. God's desire is that His children grow into the place of discerning and walking in His perfect will.

The world often celebrates results without carefully examining the path taken to achieve them. An act may appear good because it benefits people, yet the motives behind it may be selfish, dishonest, or rooted in pride. Likewise, something may be considered acceptable because it complies with human expectations or cultural norms, while still falling short of God's standard of righteousness.

Throughout Scripture, God consistently reminds us that He is not only concerned with outward actions but also with the condition of the heart. Human beings naturally judge by appearances, but God weighs motives, intentions, and obedience.

As the Lord declared to Samuel:

“For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

This means that an action can receive the applause of people and still fail to receive the approval of God.

Our generation has become increasingly concerned with what is legally permissible, socially acceptable, or publicly celebrated. Yet the kingdom of God operates on a different standard. The question is no longer, "Can I do this?" but rather, "Does this reflect the character of Christ? Does it honour God? Is it righteous?"

There is a significant difference between what is merely lawful and what is truly righteous. The law may judge actions, but God judges both actions and motives. While earthly courts examine evidence, the Righteous Judge examines the secrets of the heart.

Scripture reminds us:

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10

One day, every life will stand before the Righteous Judge. On that day, reputation, popularity, titles, and public recognition will not determine the verdict. God will evaluate every deed according to His perfect standard of righteousness. Nothing will remain hidden, and every motive will be brought into the light.

This reality calls every believer to personal reflection. It invites us to examine the "luggage" we carry through life. Have we become satisfied with what people call good while neglecting what God calls holy? Have we settled for what is acceptable in the eyes of society while overlooking the purity and integrity that God requires?

The commendation of people is temporary, but the approval of God is eternal.

Jesus Himself warned against living for the praise of men rather than the pleasure of God. True discipleship is not measured by outward performance alone but by wholehearted obedience to the Father's will.

Therefore, this is an invitation to pause and examine your heart. Open your spiritual baggage before the Lord. Remove every habit, motive, ambition, or pursuit that may appear good on the surface but lacks the fragrance of God's righteousness. Lay aside everything that is merely acceptable by human standards but offensive before a holy God.

As you continue to pursue excellence, goodness, and integrity, never lose sight of the greater pursuit—to become more like Christ. Let your choices be governed not only by what is beneficial or permissible but by what glorifies God and reflects His nature.

When your life is measured by the standard of eternity, only that which has been shaped by God's truth, empowered by His Spirit, and motivated by love will endure.

May our daily prayer become that of the psalmist:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23–24

May we never settle for what is merely good or simply acceptable when God is calling us into His perfect will. For in the end, it is not the applause of people that matters most, but the approval of the Righteous Judge.

Shalom.
