THE DAY YOU DIE
The day you die,
everything pauses around you but life moves on without you.
Your death becomes the talk of the town,
a story that may last a week,
maybe two.
People will pass by and say,
“Eya… the guy na good person o.
E no like trouble.”
Another will say,
“I no even sabi the guy.
E no dey talk.”
And just like that,
your entire life becomes a conversation
among people who barely knew you.
They will leave comments
some beautiful,
some cruel,
some filled with memories,
some filled with lies.
The day you die,
pretence begins to lose its mask.
Those who secretly hated you
may finally unleash their anger
upon the family you left behind.
Your brothers and sisters
may begin a war with your wife and children,
claiming they have every right
to what you spent your life building.
And suddenly,
the house you called home
becomes a battlefield.
The people who once called you family
begin counting your possessions
before your body is even cold.
The day you die,
people will cry and wish
they could take your place.
They will say,
“Why him?”
“I wish it was me instead.”
But deep down,
we all know the truth
If death gave them the choice,
most would still choose to live.
So perhaps the real question isn't
what will people say when we die?
It is
What are we doing with the life
we still have?
Because one day,
the noise will stop for us.
And life will move on.
