My Project Work.

My Project Work

I am a student studying Glass and Silicate Technology, and I am currently undergoing my final-year project work. Honestly, this stage of my academic journey has been overwhelming. Final-year project work is often described as one of the most important parts of university life, but no one really tells you how stressful, frustrating, and emotionally draining it can become, especially when your practical results refuse to cooperate with you.

My project topic is “Improving the Mechanical Strength of Ceramic Tiles Using Rice Husk Ash and Cullet.” The project involves producing ceramic tiles using rice husk ash and waste glass, also known as cullet, together with the basic raw materials normally used in the production of ceramic tiles.

At first, the project sounded interesting and straightforward. I was excited about the idea of using waste materials such as rice husk ash and waste glass to produce ceramic tiles. Apart from improving the mechanical strength of the tiles, the project also gives us an opportunity to explore the possibility of converting waste materials into something useful. However, the practical aspect of the project has turned out to be much more difficult than I initially expected.

The production of these tiles has been frustrating and stressful. We have carried out about five test runs so far, and unfortunately, the results have been disappointing. The tiles kept breaking easily, and no matter how much effort we put into the process, we were not getting the strength we expected.

Initially, we carried out the tests without adding a binder. We thought the kaolin we added would be enough to bind the raw materials together. We assumed that during the pressing and subsequent processing, the materials would compact properly and form a strong tile. Unfortunately, that assumption did not work out.

The tiles continued to break.

Sometimes, we would feel that we had finally gotten it right, only to discover another problem during the next stage. At some point, immediately after the tiles came out of the pressing machine, they would break. Imagine putting effort into measuring the materials, mixing them properly, preparing the mould, and then pressing everything together, only to watch the tile break almost immediately. It was honestly frustrating.

There were moments when I wondered whether we were ever going to get a successful result. Each failed test meant going back to the drawing board, trying to understand what went wrong, and preparing to repeat the process again. It was not just physically stressful; it was also mentally exhausting.

We began to realize that something was missing from our formulation. The raw materials were not compacting strongly enough, and the absence of a proper binder was affecting the green strength of the tiles. This was when we finally decided to get a binder that could help hold the raw materials together more effectively.

Thankfully, the introduction of the binder made a difference. It helped to compact the raw materials together and gave the tile body better cohesion before further processing. It was a small breakthrough, but after several failed attempts, it felt like a major achievement.

This experience has taught me that practical research is not always as simple as reading about a process in a textbook. You can understand the theory perfectly and still face unexpected challenges when you begin the actual experiment. Sometimes, the materials behave differently from what you expect, and sometimes, you have to repeat the same process several times before finding what works.

My project is still ongoing, and there is still a lot of work to be done. We have to continue testing, adjusting the formulation, observing the results, and trying to improve the mechanical strength of the tiles. Although the process has been frustrating, I am beginning to understand that failure is also part of research.

For now, I am learning to be patient with the process. Every broken tile, every failed test, and every unexpected result is teaching me something new. I may not have the perfect tile yet, but I believe that with more trials, adjustments, and determination, we will eventually get the result we are looking for.

After all, the goal of research is not always to get it right on the first attempt. Sometimes, the journey through the failures is what eventually leads you to the right result.
