Things I’m Learning in My Twenties
My twenties have been teaching me a lot.
Not necessarily things I didn't know before, but things I'm beginning to understand differently now that I'm experiencing life for myself.
I've had my share of experiences and struggles, so I wouldn't say I entered my twenties completely unaware of how life works. But there are some lessons you only truly understand when you live through them.
I'm learning that not everyone will fit into my life.
I can't say I've figured friendship out completely. Most of the friends I've made have lifestyles that don't really match mine. Sometimes, what they want for themselves is simply different from what I want.
And I've realized that's okay.
Not everyone has to live the way I live, and I don't have to change myself just to fit into someone's lifestyle.
I'm learning that love doesn't mean always being available.
For a long time, I thought being there for someone meant making myself available whenever they needed me.
I've fallen victim to that more than once, and sometimes I ended up being the one who got hurt.
Now I'm learning that loving someone doesn't mean forgetting myself.
I can care deeply about people and still have boundaries.
I can be there for someone without being available for everything.
I'm learning the importance of having my own money.
There is a different kind of confidence that comes from knowing you can provide certain things for yourself.
Working and having my own money has taught me that independence isn't just about buying whatever I want. It's also about not having to constantly depend on someone else whenever I need something.
I'm also learning that earning money is one thing, but knowing how to save it is another.
And trust me, I'm still learning that part. 😂
I'm learning that I don't have to please everyone.
I used to care a lot about what people thought—my family, my friends, and even the way I lived my life.
But I'm slowly realizing that trying to please everybody can make you lose yourself.
I don't need to become someone else just because that's who people expect me to be.
I can simply be myself.
I'm learning to enjoy being alone.
Being alone doesn't mean I'm lonely.
It doesn't mean I'm proud, and it definitely doesn't mean I don't need people.
Sometimes, I just need time with myself.
There is a certain peace that comes from being able to sit with yourself without feeling like you need someone's presence to make you feel okay.
I'm learning to appreciate that peace.
I'm learning to stop carrying other people's problems.
One mistake that has taught me a valuable lesson is always covering for my sisters.
I've done it out of love, only to eventually be the one who gets blamed.
It has taught me that helping people doesn't mean I have to take responsibility for their actions.
I'm also learning from my mistakes with money, especially not knowing how to save properly.
Some lessons are expensive, but they are still lessons.
I'm learning that I still have a lot to figure out.
One thing I'm currently trying to understand is how to balance my life and work more on myself.
I don't have everything figured out.
And honestly, I don't think I'm supposed to.
I'm still becoming the person I want to be.
But I'm proud of myself.
Omo, e no easy. 😂
When I look at the person I've become, one thing I'm genuinely proud of is that I have learned not to depend on someone else for my survival.
I've had struggles. I've made mistakes. I've learned some lessons the hard way.
But I'm still here.
Still learning.
Still growing.
Still trying.
And if I could go back and speak to my younger self, I wouldn't give her a long speech.
I'd simply tell her:
You must survive in this world. And don't let yourself be intimidated.
Because maybe that's what my twenties are really about—not having everything figured out, but becoming strong enough to face whatever comes next.
