The next day, I went back to the office as usual.
Everything seemed normal. At least, for everyone else. For me, nothing felt normal anymore.
I kept thinking about Adrian, the cheque, and the message he had sent me the previous day.
I tried to concentrate on my work and act as though everything was fine.
Then Adrian walked toward his office.
As he passed my desk, he suddenly stopped.
My heart jumped.
He didn't look at me.
He didn't say a word.
He simply stood there for a moment before continuing toward his office.
I remained frozen.
I didn't know what that meant.
A few moments later, I heard murmuring.
I looked around.
Some employees had been called into the office and were now leaving with tears in their eyes.
They had been sacked.
My heart sank.
I remembered everything Rachel had told me about Adrian.
Whenever he came into the country, he came to make changes.
He could sack employees without hesitation.
I looked toward his office.
Was I next?
Was this my fate too?
I had refused to meet him the previous night.
Maybe he was angry.
Maybe he had already decided to end my internship.
Then the manager suddenly called me.
“Amara.”
I looked at him.
“Take these files to the boss's office.”
I was surprised.
“Me?”
“Yes. Take them to him.”
I hesitated.
“But why me? What about his secretary?”
The manager looked at me.
“Here you are, an intern. You will do what you are told.”
I had no answer.
I took the files and walked toward Adrian's office.
Every step made my heart beat faster.
I stood outside his door, took a deep breath, and knocked.
“Come in.”
I entered.
Adrian gestured toward his table, indicating that I should put the files there.
But because of the fear running through me, my hands suddenly became weak.
The files slipped from my hands and fell to the floor.
Adrian looked at me.
“Oh, Amara.”
He stood up from his chair and walked over to help me pick up the files.
I bent down too, but before I could gather everything, I noticed the way he was looking at me.
He moved a little closer and began making what felt like a romantic approach.
My heart raced. I immediately stepped back.
“No, sir.”
He paused.
For a moment, there was silence between us. It was as if he had asked for my consent without saying much, and I had made my answer clear.
I refused.
He did not press further.
Instead, he withdrew and picked up the remaining files.
He placed them on the table.
“I've received the files. You can go back.”
I nodded quietly.
I turned around and began walking toward the door. Just before I left, I heard his voice.
“Amara.”
I turned.
He looked at me briefly.
“You're looking pretty today.”
I didn't know what to say.
I simply nodded and walked out.
But as I returned to my desk, my heart was beating faster than before.
I couldn't tell whether I had just escaped something or whether I had only postponed it.
