Kylian Mbappé Reveals How Close He Came to Joining Liverpool
Kylian Mbappé has revealed that he was once close to joining Liverpool, with his mother playing a significant role in encouraging him to consider a move to Anfield. The France international made the revelation while speaking to The Athletic, explaining that Liverpool was his mother’s preferred destination for him during the early stages of his career.
According to Mbappé, his mother was a strong admirer of former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and believed that working under the German coach could have been an excellent opportunity for her son. She reportedly wanted Mbappé to experience the Premier League and felt Liverpool would provide the right environment for his development.
Mbappé explained that he ultimately decided not to follow his mother’s preference because he wanted to remain in Paris. At that stage of his career, the young forward was determined to continue playing in his hometown rather than leave France before establishing himself as a major footballer.
The forward recalled that his mother regularly spoke enthusiastically about the possibility of him playing at Anfield. She imagined him walking onto the famous pitch in front of Liverpool supporters and experiencing the atmosphere inside one of football’s most recognised stadiums.
Mbappé also revealed that his mother personally travelled to Liverpool when discussions about a potential transfer began. She visited the city and Anfield, while also meeting people associated with the club. Her experience reportedly left a strong impression on her, as she came away convinced that Liverpool was a special club.
During her visit, Mbappé’s mother also attended matches at Anfield so that she could experience the atmosphere for herself. Rather than simply relying on what she had heard about Liverpool, she wanted to understand what the environment was like and imagine her son playing in front of the club’s supporters.
The French superstar said Liverpool remained a regular topic of conversation between him and his mother. She continued to encourage him to consider the move, repeatedly expressing her belief that Anfield would be an exciting place for him to continue his football journey.
Mbappé also spoke positively about his relationship with Klopp. He said he had the opportunity to meet the former Liverpool manager and developed a good relationship with him. The striker described Klopp as an exceptional manager and said he had enormous respect for the German coach.
Despite the attraction of Liverpool and his mother’s enthusiasm, Mbappé chose a different path. His priority at the time was to remain in Paris and continue his development in his own country. That decision eventually allowed him to establish himself at Paris Saint-Germain before later moving on to another major chapter in his career.
The revelation provides an interesting insight into one of the potential transfers that could have changed Mbappé’s career trajectory. Had he followed his mother’s advice, the France captain could have developed his career in the Premier League under Klopp and experienced life at Anfield.
Instead, Mbappé remained in France and continued building his reputation before becoming one of the most prominent players in world football. His comments also underline the important role his family played in discussions surrounding his career and show just how seriously Liverpool was considered during his formative years.
