Are you On your bed, dreaming of the life you want, or on your feet, making a plan to make it happen?
The important message of this simple question is about life, concentration, discipline, and success. Everyone has dreams. Everyone wants something better, either a successful career, a successful business, a good education, financial stability, a peaceful family or the chance to make a difference in the world. However, it is not just dreams that can transform our lives. Dreams require action.
The bed symbolizes comfort. It's a place where we rest, where we relax and where we recover. It's okay to rest, after all, even hard workers need a break. The issue is when comfort is a justification for inaction. You can't stay in bed all day long dreaming about a different future and have it happen.
Being on your feet represents action. It's when you're prepared to work for what you want. It doesn't mean you have to get up when you are feeling unmotivated. It's a decision to be disciplined rather than lazy, and it's a decision to make progress rather than making excuses.
Sometimes, compromises will need to be made to reach your objectives. You'll need to work through the night, study in the middle of the night, work when everyone else is playing, save money when everyone else is spending, and learn new skills when everyone else is just wasting time. You might need to get away from distractions and those who are continually discouraging that vision.
One of the strongest weapons that you can have is your focus.
When you are focused, you know that you don't have to pay attention to everything. There will always be distractions. You will always have those who won't believe you. You will never be alone with opportunities to be spending your time in a way that is unproductive. However, one who is focused understands what is important and will not get lost in the journey.
Each day ask yourself, “What do I am I doing to get closer to my objective?”
It could be a little thing. You might read a few pages of a book, you might practice a skill, you could make an important phone call, you could finish an application for a job, you might work on your business, you could finish up a portion of your project, you might save some money, or you could just make a better decision than you did yesterday.
Don't underestimate small steps! Steps are taken one by one on a mountaintop. Similarly, significant accomplishments can come from small steps done over a period of time.
There will also be challenging days. Failure, rejection, disappointment, financial problems, and unexpected delays will occur. Don't let a negative experience discourage you from pursuing your dream. Sometimes failure can be a better teacher than success.
If you trip down, study up. If you don't succeed, tweak it. If you are exhausted, get some sleep. Rest, then recuperate.
What you do with your present will make a difference in your future. Yesterday is gone and can't be changed, but today you can decide what you will do.
So, now ask yourself again: Are you on the bed or on your feet?
Waking Up is the time to get up if you've been sleeping on your dreams. If you've been putting things off, it's time to start. When you have lost your focus, it's time to refocus.
Get up. Take action. Stay disciplined. Maintain focus on your goal.
One day you will realize that the thing you did not do was stay in bed, but instead, to get up and get on your feet, was one of the most important things you ever did.
