Life is a road that has its trials, temptations, distractions, and moments of uncertainty. We are called as Christians, to stay faithful to God no matter what is going on around us. Things can change, persons can disappoint us, challenging circumstances can come up but one thing should always be held constant, our relationship with God. Hence the need to have our lights lit.
In Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus relates the story of the ten virgins. Five were wise and five were foolish. The wise virgins had extra oil to put into their lamps, but the foolish virgins did not have any. While the groom was late, everyone fell asleep. But when the bridegroom came, those who were ready went in with him, and they had eternal life. But when the bridegroom came, those who were ready went in with him, and they had eternal life. Then the door was finally closed to those who were not ready.
A valuable lesson is learned from this parable: the importance of spiritual preparedness. Our lamps are our spiritual lives and the oil is a symbol of our spiritual readiness and devotion in anticipation of the coming of Christ. We can't afford to be casual about our relationship with God.
When life gets difficult, hold onto your lamp and hold on to your faith. It is praying when you are weak, trusting God when the answers are delayed and obeying the Word of God when it is not popular. This is an exercise in saying NO to the joys and diversions of the world that would put out the flames of your spiritual life.
Sadly, many start their walk with Christian faith with enthusiasm but then lose their passion. They are too busy to pray, too distracted to study the Bible, and too comfortable to come into God's presence. Gradually their spiritual flame starts to die down. They could still be in church, doing things there, but they do not have a strong connection to God.
My dear ones, don't let hardships extinguish your faith. Never let disappointment, financial problems, unmet expectations or others fail you from God. Keep in mind that your trust in God should not be based on your plans.
Moreover, we must keep in mind that Jesus is coming back. Before Jesus returns, we are warned to be ready for He says we don't know what day or time it will be (Matthew 25:13). He came, and we shouldn't forget that we need to be ready to live each day spiritually. We must not postpone when it comes to taking our relationship with God seriously until now.
At the return of the Lord, one can't borrow another person's spiritual life. Your parents' faith is not the same as your personal faith relationship with God, and your pastor's prayers are not the same as your personal prayers to God. All believers are challenged to be personally faithful to God.
Therefore, examine your life today. Has your light gone out or has the fire gone out? Are you growing in your faith or are you moving away from God? Pay attention to the condition of your soul.
Fortunately, there's a way to "come back" to God when we become spiritually cold. You can renew your commitment to Him through sincere repentance, prayer, reading His Word and relying on the Holy Spirit.
Finally, do not put out the light; for the Bridegroom is coming! Keep alive your faith, keep clean your heart, keep devoted your life to God. Avoid the distractions of the world's deceptive joys. Watch, pray, trust, and serve the Lord.
May we never be ready, spiritually, when Jesus comes. Pray that our lights would be lit until we meet Him in person.
Don't put out your lamp. The Bridegroom can come a lot sooner than you think!
