Chapter Six — The Girl at the Window

1. THE SECRET HER MOTHER FEARED

"Isabella has returned to the city."

Those words kept ringing in Amara's ears.

She stood in the kitchen, staring at her mother as though she had suddenly become a stranger.

For seventeen years, Grace Williams had been the one person Amara believed she could trust without question. Her mother had always been strong, loving, and honest with her.

But now, looking at the fear in Grace's eyes, Amara realized there was a side of her mother she had never known.

"Mum," she whispered, "what exactly happened between you and Isabella's family?"

Grace turned away.

"Amara, please. I don't want to discuss this tonight."

"But you just said Isabella has returned. You know where she is, don't you?"

"I didn't say that."

"You said if Daniel's father discovers where she's hiding, we could all be in trouble."

Grace closed her eyes.

Amara stepped closer.

"Please tell me the truth."

For several seconds, Grace remained silent.

Then she pulled out a chair and sat down.

"Many years ago, before you were born, I worked as an administrative assistant at a company owned by Richard Carter."

Amara sat opposite her.

"Daniel's father?"

"Yes."

Grace looked down at her hands.

"Richard was a respected businessman. He had several companies, and people admired him because of his wealth and influence. I worked in one of his offices for almost three years."

"What happened?"

"During that time, I became friends with a woman named Margaret. She was Isabella's mother."

Amara listened carefully.

"Margaret's husband owned a small company that supplied equipment to some of Richard's businesses. At first, everything was fine. Then a major business disagreement occurred."

"What kind of disagreement?"

Grace hesitated.

"Margaret believed Richard had deliberately broken an agreement that would have protected her husband's company. Her husband lost money, their business collapsed, and their family went through a terrible period."

"Did Richard do it?"

"I don't know everything that happened. I only know that Margaret believed he did."

Amara frowned.

"Then why did you promise never to speak about it?"

Grace looked at her daughter.

"Because I witnessed something I was never supposed to see."

Amara's heart began to beat faster.

"What did you see?"

Before Grace could answer, her phone rang again.

She glanced at the screen and immediately stood.

"I have to take this."

"Mum—"

"Please, Amara."

Grace walked into the next room and closed the door.

Amara remained at the kitchen table.

She had expected answers.

Instead, she had discovered an even bigger mystery.

And she was beginning to understand why Daniel had come to Rosewood Academy.

He wasn't simply trying to find an old friend.

He was trying to uncover a truth that powerful people wanted buried.

2. THE GIRL WHO RETURNED

The next morning, Amara arrived at school with a determination she had never felt before.

She was going to speak to Daniel.

She was going to find Isabella.

And she was going to discover what their parents had been hiding.

Tessa met her near the entrance.

"Bestie, you look like you're about to investigate a crime."

Amara gave her a tired smile.

"Something like that."

"Did your mother tell you anything?"

"Some things. Not enough."

Tessa sighed.

"These adults are making everything unnecessarily complicated."

"Tell me about it."

They entered the building together.

As they approached their classroom, several students were gathered around the noticeboard.

Someone whispered, "Is that her?"

Another student replied, "I think so."

Amara stopped.

"What's happening?"

Tessa looked toward the crowd.

"I don't know."

They moved closer.

A girl stood near the noticeboard, speaking quietly to the school secretary.

She wore a simple white blouse, dark trousers, and carried a worn backpack.

Her black hair fell loosely around her shoulders.

There was something familiar about her face, even though Amara had never seen her before.

Then the girl turned.

Their eyes met.

The girl's expression changed.

For one brief moment, she looked frightened.

Then she quickly turned away.

Amara felt a strange certainty settle inside her.

She knew who the girl was.

"Isabella," she whispered.

Tessa looked at her.

"What?"

Amara started toward the girl.

But before she could reach her, Isabella hurried down the corridor and disappeared around the corner.

"Wait!" Amara called.

The girl didn't stop.

Amara ran after her.

By the time she reached the end of the corridor, Isabella was gone.

Only an open door leading toward the old auditorium remained.

Amara stood there, confused.

Then her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

You saw her. Don't follow her.

Amara stared at the message.

A second message appeared.

If you care about Daniel, leave Isabella alone.

She slowly lowered her phone.

Someone had been watching her.

Someone knew she was searching for Isabella.

And whoever it was had just made one thing clear.

They didn't want the two girls to meet.

3. DANIEL'S FEAR

Daniel found Amara during the morning break.

She was sitting alone beneath the tree in the school garden.

He approached slowly.

"Hey."

She looked up.

"Hi."

He sat beside her.

"Are you avoiding me?"

Amara looked surprised.

"No."

"You've barely spoken to me today."

"I've been thinking."

"About what?"

She hesitated.

Then she decided to tell him.

"I think Isabella is here."

Daniel immediately turned toward her.

"What?"

"I saw a girl this morning. I think it was her."

"Where?"

"Near the administration office."

Daniel stood.

"Why didn't you call me?"

"I didn't have time. She ran away."

He looked toward the school building.

"Did she say anything?"

"No."

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

"After all this time..."

His voice faded.

Amara watched him carefully.

"Daniel, I need to ask you something."

He looked at her.

"Anything."

"Did your father really have something to do with Isabella's disappearance?"

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

Then he answered honestly.

"I don't know."

Amara frowned.

"But you suspect him."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Daniel looked down at his hands.

"Because the last time I saw Isabella, she told me she had discovered something about my father. She said she needed to show me proof."

"What happened next?"

"My father found out we were talking. He told me Isabella was trouble and ordered me to stay away from her."

"And you listened?"

"At first."

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"I was seventeen. I thought my father knew what was best for me. But when Isabella disappeared, I realized something wasn't right."

Amara studied him.

"Do you think she was telling the truth?"

"I think she believed she was."

He turned toward Amara.

"And now you're involved too."

She shook her head.

"Daniel, I chose to get involved when I decided I wanted the truth."

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he smiled faintly.

"You're much braver than you realize."

Amara felt her cheeks warm.

"Don't try to distract me with compliments."

"I'm not."

"Daniel."

"What?"

She tried to remain serious, but a smile escaped her.

He laughed softly.

For a few seconds, they sat together beneath the tree, enjoying the rare moment of peace.

Then Daniel's expression changed.

"Amara, there's something I've wanted to ask you."

"What?"

"Do you still trust me?"

The question caught her off guard.

She looked at him.

"I want to."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"That's fair."

"I don't know everything about you yet. And I don't want to discover that our friendship was built on lies."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"It wasn't."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Amara held his gaze.

Then she reached for his hand.

It was a small gesture, but it surprised them both.

Daniel looked down at their joined hands.

When he looked up again, his expression had softened.

"Thank you," he whispered.

Amara smiled.

"Just don't give me another reason to regret it."

"I won't."

For the first time in days, Amara felt that perhaps she could trust him.

But neither of them noticed Vanessa standing near the classroom window.

She had seen everything.

And she was furious.

4. VANESSA'S LITTLE GAME

Vanessa had never liked losing.

At Rosewood Academy, she was accustomed to being the girl everyone noticed.

She was the girl boys wanted to impress, girls wanted to befriend, and teachers expected to perform well.

But Daniel Carter had arrived and disrupted the comfortable little world she had built.

He barely looked at her.

He didn't seem interested in her family, her popularity, or the expensive gifts she casually mentioned.

Instead, he spent his time with Amara Williams.

A girl who didn't even seem to understand how much attention she was receiving.

Vanessa stood beside Chloe near the lockers.

"Did you see them?"

Chloe sighed.

"Yes, Vanessa. Everyone saw them."

"She was holding his hand."

"Maybe they're getting close."

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Don't say it like that."

Chloe raised an eyebrow.

"Like what?"

"Like it's normal!"

Chloe folded her arms.

"Well, what do you want me to say?"

Vanessa looked toward the garden.

"I want to know what Amara has that I don't."

Chloe stared at her.

"Maybe Daniel likes her because she's nice to him."

Vanessa looked offended.

"Are you saying I'm not nice?"

"I'm saying you don't have to turn everything into a competition."

Vanessa scoffed.

"You wouldn't understand."

She opened her phone and searched for a contact she had saved the previous evening.

The name was simply Unknown.

She typed:

Amara saw Isabella today. Daniel is getting closer to her. We need to do something.

The reply arrived a minute later.

Then make sure Daniel discovers what Amara's mother did.

Vanessa frowned.

She typed back.

What did she do?

The response was immediate.

Find out.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

For the first time, she wondered whether she had become involved in something she couldn't control.

But then she remembered Daniel smiling at Amara.

Her jealousy returned.

She locked her phone.

If Amara was hiding something, Vanessa would find it.

And when she did, she would make sure Daniel found out too.

5. THE INVITATION

That afternoon, the cultural festival preparations began.

Students decorated the hall with colourful ribbons and banners while teachers supervised the arrangements.

Amara was assigned to help organize the literature and drama section.

Daniel volunteered to help her.

Tessa immediately noticed.

"Interesting."

Amara sighed.

"Please don't start."

"I'm not starting anything. I'm simply observing."

"Observe quietly."

Tessa laughed and walked away to collect some materials.

Daniel approached Amara with a bundle of posters.

"Where do these go?"

"Near the stage."

He followed her instructions.

For the next hour, they worked together.

They argued over where to place the decorations, laughed when a roll of tape stuck to Daniel's sleeve, and eventually agreed on a design.

It felt easy.

Natural.

And Amara found herself wishing the afternoon wouldn't end.

When they finished, Daniel leaned against the wall.

"So, about the festival."

Amara looked at him.

"What about it?"

"Have you decided whether you're coming with me?"

She smiled.

"You haven't stopped asking."

"Because you haven't given me an answer."

She pretended to think.

"Hmm."

Daniel stared at her.

"Amara, please."

She laughed.

"Okay. I'll go with you."

His face brightened.

"Really?"

"Yes."

"Then it's a date."

Amara's eyes widened.

"I agreed to attend the festival with you!"

"And I'm a boy attending a festival with a girl I like."

She shook her head.

"You're unbelievable."

Daniel grinned.

"Saturday. I'll meet you at the school entrance."

Amara nodded.

"Saturday."

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Daniel said softly, "I'm glad I met you."

Amara looked at him.

"Even though I'm always asking questions?"

"Especially because of that."

She smiled.

He smiled back.

And for a few precious seconds, the world seemed wonderfully simple.

Then a voice interrupted them.

"Amara?"

They turned.

A girl stood near the doorway.

She was wearing the same white blouse and dark trousers Amara had seen that morning.

Her face was pale, and her eyes moved nervously around the hall.

Daniel stared at her.

He looked as though he had forgotten how to breathe.

"Isabella?"

The girl nodded.

"Hello, Daniel."

He took a step toward her.

"Where have you been?"

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel shook his head.

"Do you know how long I've been looking for you?"

"I know."

"Then why didn't you contact me?"

Isabella glanced at Amara.

Her expression changed.

"Because I was afraid."

Daniel looked confused.

"Afraid of what?"

Isabella swallowed.

"Of what your father would do if he discovered I was talking to you."

Daniel went completely still.

Amara felt the atmosphere change.

The person they had been searching for was finally standing in front of them.

But instead of bringing relief, her arrival seemed to open a door to something far more dangerous.

6. WHAT ISABELLA KNEW

Daniel stepped closer to Isabella.

"Tell me what happened."

Isabella looked toward the open doorway.

"We can't talk here."

"Why?"

"Because people are watching."

Amara glanced around the hall.

Several students were busy decorating, but no one appeared to be paying attention to them.

Isabella shook her head.

"You don't understand. Your father has people everywhere."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Then we need to talk now."

Isabella looked at him sadly.

"You haven't changed."

"Neither have you."

For a moment, they simply stared at each other.

Amara suddenly felt like an outsider.

There was a history between them that she couldn't understand.

A closeness that existed long before she had met Daniel.

And although Daniel had told her they were only friends, seeing them together made her uncomfortable in a way she hadn't expected.

Isabella finally turned to Amara.

"You're Amara Williams, aren't you?"

Amara nodded.

"Yes."

Isabella took a shaky breath.

"Your mother was my mother's closest friend."

"I know."

"Then you know what happened to my family?"

"Only part of it."

Isabella looked at Daniel.

"Did he tell you about the business?"

"Yes."

"Then you know why I disappeared."

Daniel frowned.

"No. I know why you were afraid. I still don't know what you discovered."

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

"I found documents proving that your father had deliberately hidden information about my father's company."

Daniel stared at her.

"What?"

"He knew the business agreement was going to fail. He knew my father would lose everything, but he allowed him to sign it anyway."

Daniel shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense."

"I know how it sounds."

"Did you show anyone the documents?"

"I tried."

"Who?"

Isabella hesitated.

Then she looked at Amara.

"Your mother."

Amara felt the blood drain from her face.

"My mother?"

Isabella nodded.

"She was the only person I trusted who had worked for Richard. I believed she could help me understand what the documents meant."

"What did she do?"

Isabella looked down.

"She told me to keep quiet."

Amara stared at her.

"No. My mother wouldn't do that."

"I wanted to believe she would help me too."

"You're lying."

Isabella flinched.

Amara immediately regretted the words, but she couldn't stop herself.

"My mother has never done anything to hurt anyone."

Isabella's voice trembled.

"I didn't say she hurt anyone. I said she was afraid."

Daniel stepped between them.

"Isabella, what are you trying to say?"

Isabella looked at him.

"Your father isn't the only person who knows what happened. Amara's mother knows more than she's admitting."

Amara shook her head.

"This is impossible."

Isabella reached into her bag and pulled out a small envelope.

"I came back because I found something else."

She handed the envelope to Daniel.

Inside was a photograph of several documents.

Daniel examined them.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get these?"

"From my father's old files."

He looked up.

"Are they real?"

"I believe so."

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then he whispered, "My father told me these documents didn't exist."

Isabella nodded.

"That's why I came back."

She looked at Amara.

"And that's why your mother is frightened."

Before anyone could respond, a loud voice echoed through the hall.

"Daniel Carter!"

They turned.

Richard Carter stood in the doorway.

His expression was cold.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Father?"

Richard's eyes moved from Daniel to Isabella.

For the first time, the powerful businessman appeared genuinely shocked.

Then his expression hardened.

"Isabella."

She stepped backward.

Richard looked at the envelope in Daniel's hand.

"What are you doing here?"

Isabella swallowed.

"Looking for the truth."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

"Then explain the documents."

Richard looked at Daniel.

"Give me the envelope."

Daniel held it firmly.

"No."

The hall fell silent.

Richard stared at his son as though he couldn't believe what he had heard.

"What did you say?"

Daniel stepped closer to Isabella.

"I said no."

For the first time in his life, Daniel was openly refusing to obey his father in front of other people.

And everyone in the hall could see it.

Richard's expression became dangerously calm.

"Very well."

He turned toward the doorway.

But before leaving, he looked directly at Amara.

"Miss Williams, I suggest you ask your mother why she kept those documents hidden."

Amara froze.

Richard smiled faintly.

"Because if Isabella has told you everything, she has certainly left out the most important part."

Then he walked away.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at the envelope.

Isabella looked terrified.

And Amara stood in the middle of the hall, realizing that her mother's secret might be far more complicated than she had ever imagined.

7. THE LAST MESSAGE

That evening, Amara returned home with one question filling her mind.

What had her mother done?

She found Grace sitting in the living room.

Her mother looked up.

"Amara? You're home."

Amara stood in front of her.

"Did you know Isabella had returned?"

Grace's expression changed.

"Yes."

"Did you know she was looking for Daniel?"

Grace hesitated.

"Yes."

Amara swallowed.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted to protect you."

"From what?"

Grace stood.

"Amara, please. I can't explain everything tonight."

Amara felt tears gathering in her eyes.

"Everyone keeps saying that. Everyone keeps telling me they're protecting me, but nobody will tell me the truth!"

Grace reached for her.

Amara stepped back.

"I don't know who to believe anymore."

Her mother looked heartbroken.

"I am still your mother."

"I know."

"Then trust me."

Amara shook her head.

"Trust isn't something you can demand, Mum. It's something you earn."

She turned and hurried upstairs.

In her bedroom, she sat on the edge of her bed and cried quietly.

She wasn't sure whether she was crying because of Daniel, because of her mother, or because the life she thought she understood was beginning to fall apart.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

Daniel: Are you okay?

Amara stared at the screen.

She wanted to tell him everything.

She wanted to ask him to come over and help her understand what was happening.

Instead, she typed:

Amara: I don't know anymore.

His reply arrived almost immediately.

Daniel: I'm here if you need me.

Amara smiled sadly.

Then another message appeared.

This one came from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Richard Carter standing beside Grace Williams outside an office building.

Underneath it were the words:

Your mother didn't just know what happened to Isabella's family. She helped make it happen.

Amara stopped breathing for a moment.

She enlarged the photograph.

Her mother stood beside Richard, holding a thick folder.

Both of them were smiling.

The date beneath the photograph was the same year Isabella disappeared.

Amara's hands trembled.

Was it possible?

Had her mother helped Richard Carter destroy Isabella's family?

And if she had, why?

Her phone buzzed again.

One final message appeared.

Ask your mother what she did with the original contract.

Amara stared at the screen.

Then she slowly turned toward her bedroom door.

Downstairs, she could hear her mother moving around the kitchen.

For seventeen years, Grace Williams had been Amara's safe place.

But tonight, for the first time, Amara was afraid of the woman who had raised her.
