The Day I Found Something I Was Never Supposed to See
I knew something was wrong the moment I saw the words “DO NOT OPEN.”
It was a normal Saturday afternoon. My mother had asked me to clean my room and arrange some old boxes that had been sitting in the corner for years.
I wasn't happy about it, but I started anyway.
While moving one of the boxes, I noticed a small brown envelope under it. It was covered in dust. I picked it up and looked at it.
There was no name on it.
Then I turned it around.
That was when I saw the words.
“DO NOT OPEN.”
I stared at them for a few seconds.
Of course, that made me want to open it even more.
I looked at the door to make sure nobody was coming. Then I slowly opened the envelope.
Inside were some old pictures and a folded piece of paper.
I picked up one of the pictures.
My eyes opened wide.
It was my father.
But he looked very young.
Standing beside him was a man I had never seen before.
I picked up another picture.
The same man was there.
I checked another one.
Still the same man.
My heart started beating fast.
“Who is this?” I whispered.
I unfolded the piece of paper. There was an address written on it and a date from many years ago.
Before I could look at it properly, I heard my mother calling my name.
I quickly put everything back.
But then something fell out of the envelope.
A small key.
I picked it up and stared at it.
My mind was full of questions.
Who was the man?
What did the key open?
And why had my father hidden all this?
I couldn't wait.
I ran downstairs and found my father sitting in the living room.
I put the key on the table.
“Dad, what's this?”
He looked at the key.
His face changed.
He didn't speak.
“Where did you get that?” he asked.
His voice was serious.
I suddenly felt nervous.
I told him about the envelope and the pictures. He picked up one of the pictures and looked at it quietly.
After a few seconds, he smiled.
“That was my best friend,” he said.
I was shocked.
He told me that they had been very close when they were young. They had lived together for some time, but later they moved to different places and lost contact.
The address on the paper was the address of the house they once lived in.
And the key belonged to that house.
I couldn't believe it.
I had thought I had found some big family secret. Instead, I had found a part of my father's past that I knew nothing about.
My father started telling me stories about his younger days. Some of them were so funny that we both laughed.
The fear I had felt earlier was gone.
We sat together and looked through the old pictures. My father told me about his friend, their adventures and the things they used to do.
That small envelope had changed an ordinary Saturday into a day I would never forget.
I also learned something that day.
Sometimes, the things we think are hiding a scary secret are actually hiding a beautiful memory.
