Michael Carrick Praises Man United’s Energy After Fulham Draw, Admits More Improvement Is Needed

According today news, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has praised the energy and determination shown by his players during their 1-1 Premier League draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage, insisting that there were positive signs despite another frustrating result for the Red Devils.

Manchester United entered the match under pressure after a difficult week that had seen them lose the Manchester derby to Manchester City before suffering a Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton. A third consecutive defeat would have increased the pressure surrounding Carrick, but Matheus Cunha’s late equaliser rescued a point for the visitors.

Speaking after the game, Carrick focused on the attitude displayed by his players and said he was pleased with the energy they brought to the contest.

“I am happy with the energy we show today. I think we can take a lot from today,” Carrick said, highlighting the aspects of the performance that he believes Manchester United can build on as the season progresses.

The manager also acknowledged that his team still has plenty of work to do. Carrick admitted that United could have performed better in certain areas, but he believes the performance provided valuable lessons for his players.

“I think we can learn a lot as well. We can be better at certain things, that is pretty clear, but there were some good signs,” he added.

Manchester United had opportunities to take control of the match during an entertaining first half. Bruno Fernandes struck the woodwork, while Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno was forced into important saves to keep his side in the contest. United, however, were unable to turn their opportunities into a goal before the interval.

Fulham grew into the contest and eventually took the lead in the 63rd minute through an unfortunate own goal from Lisandro Martinez. Calvin Bassey’s effort was saved by Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but the rebound struck Martinez and ended up in the back of the net.

The goal put United in a difficult position, particularly after Fulham had shown good organisation and energy throughout the match. For a team already searching for consistency, falling behind away from home created another test of character for Carrick and his players.

United continued searching for an equaliser, although Fulham remained dangerous and appeared capable of holding on for their first Premier League victory under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa. Manchester United needed a decisive moment, and it eventually arrived late in the game.

With just a minute of normal time remaining, Cunha produced the breakthrough. The Brazilian forward’s long-range effort took a significant deflection before beating Leno and finding the net, allowing United to escape Craven Cottage with a point.

The equaliser was particularly important because it prevented Manchester United from suffering three defeats in the space of one week. Reuters reported that United have now won only one of their opening five Premier League matches, meaning Carrick still has considerable work ahead as he attempts to improve the team’s results.

Carrick’s comments therefore reflected both sides of the afternoon. While the manager was encouraged by the energy and some of the football produced by his players, he also recognised that the team must become more consistent and improve in key areas if they are to challenge for better results.

The draw also showed the importance of resilience. United had fallen behind through an unfortunate own goal, but instead of giving up, they continued to push for an equaliser. Cunha’s late strike ultimately gave them something to take away from a match that had threatened to become another setback.

For Carrick, the next stage will be turning the positive elements he identified into more complete performances. The manager has already accepted responsibility for the club’s difficult start and previously stressed that the focus should be on finding solutions rather than assigning blame.

The international break now provides Manchester United with an opportunity to assess their opening weeks of the campaign. Carrick will hope to use the period to work on the areas that remain problematic while maintaining the energy and commitment he praised after the Fulham match.

Manchester United supporters will also expect improvement when competitive action resumes. The club avoided another defeat at Craven Cottage, but the draw does not completely erase the concerns surrounding their early-season form.

For Carrick, however, the immediate message is clear: there are aspects of the performance worth building upon. His assessment after the match suggests that he believes the players showed the right attitude and that, with greater consistency and improvement in certain areas, the team can develop further.

The 1-1 draw ultimately gave Manchester United a point rather than the victory they wanted, but Carrick has chosen to focus on the lessons and positive signs. The challenge now is for his players to turn those signs into stronger performances and results when the Premier League returns.
