The Breath of God

Breath is a formidable thing. We often don't realise this, but we all experience life moment by moment and each moment is a gift from God. God gives us the breath of life, we wake up, breathe, walk, talk, work, dream, and love! If He didn't breathe into us, our strength would be gone, and our earthly sojourn would end here.

Genesis 2:7 says, “Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” This points to a beautiful fact: man was created out of dust, but God breathed life into him. Existence is thus not a random occurrence. We are living vessels that contain in us a life, which is ultimately God's creation.

Sometimes life can make us feel empty. We can feel exhausted with responsibilities, let down by others, down by ourselves or by failure, and uncertain about the future. At times, we feel disheartened and lose our spiritual strength. However, the God who gave life to Adam can give us life again.

This is an awesome visual aid from Ezekiel 37. There was a valley of dry bones in front of the prophet. They were a hopeless and lifeless something. But God spoke to Ezekiel, "Speak to the bones and they will come together. God breathed into them and they were alive.

It's a reminder to us that no place or no time is too dry for God to raise up. A broken dream may be reborn again. A broken heart can be mended. What is lost can be found. A person who is empty in the spiritual realm can feel renewed in the spiritual realm. God's breath restores life to that which is lifeless.

The breath of God is also the manifestation of His Spirit in us. It is impossible to live effectively on the strength of man. Our need is for God's presence, wisdom, grace and direction. There are wars which are not won by the strength of men, and problems that cannot be solved by human wisdom. When we let God guide us, however, we will receive strength from Him beyond ourselves.

Thus every breath we breathe should remind us to be grateful. We seek greater blessings from God, while we neglect the greatest blessing we have – our life! In the very act of breathing, we are given a reminder of His mercy.

If you have another day, God had a purpose for it. Don't let yesterday's failure discourage you from telling your story again. Avoid letting the challenges of the day make you think that God is not able to renew you.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill all our dry places. Fill our hearts with hope, our weaknesses with strength, our fears with courage, our journey with purpose. Bring freshness to that which is feeble and make that which was broken whole.

While you breathe, there is hope in God. The One who breathed life into you is still alive and can bring new life into your story.
