THE LITTLE ANT
poem

THE LITTLE ANT

Have you ever seen an ant

Marching bravely through the sand,

Pulling crumbs and bits of grain

Through the sunshine, through the rain?

Oh, so small! Why work so hard?

Why not rest within the yard?

Why keep moving all the day,

When there’s time to stop and play?

See him carry twice his size,

Though the hill before him lies.

Step by step, he makes his way,

Never stopping from his task.

“Little ant, what makes you hurry?

Why not stop and rest a while?

Surely you have done enough;

Surely you deserve a smile!”

But the little ant goes on,

Working quietly from dawn.

He does not complain or shout,

He just finds another route.

If the road is rough and steep,

Still he does not stop or sleep.

If the load is hard to bear,

He keeps going here and there.

Sometimes other ants appear

To help him when the load is near.

Together, strong and side by side,

They pull the heavy food inside.

Then the little ant reminds us

That great things can start out small.

You may feel that you are tiny,

But that does not mean you’ll fall.

For a mountain is climbed slowly,

And a journey starts with one.

Every little step you take

Can bring you closer to the sun.

So when something seems too difficult,

And you feel you cannot start,

Think about the little ant

With his brave and patient heart.

Do not laugh because he’s little,

Do not say that he is weak.

Sometimes those who seem the smallest

Have the greatest strength to seek.

And when your work feels heavy,

Or your road seems far away,

Take another little step—

Then another one each day.

For the ant does not need rushing

To prove what he can do.

He simply keeps on moving,

And that is how he gets through.
