CHOOSE YOUR CIRCLE WISELY

CHOOSE YOUR CIRCLE WISELY

Life is a journey and people who walk with us can make a difference to the direction of our journey. There will be some who spur you to improvement and others who subtly move you away from your purpose. This is why it is important to make a wise choice of circles in life.

Your circle is important because the people in your circle will influence your thoughts, attitudes, habits and even your future. If you are constantly with people who believe in growth, discipline, honesty and hard work, they rub it into you that you too should be that way. When you have people around you who laugh at laziness, negativity, dishonesty and destructive actions, you may find them to be the norm.

Not all people who smile at you are really wishing you well. Some will celebrate you when you are doing well, but will get uncomfortable when you start getting beyond their expectations. Some people fear to follow their dreams because they see others who aren't. Identify persons that truly care for you and those who wish to have access to you.

Selecting your circle carefully does not mean that you believe that everyone is bad, and that you are not allowed to surround yourself with people who are different to you. It's about making a conscious decision about who you let influence your life. You don't need to give everyone a seat at your table, you can be kind to everyone.

A good friend does not always say what you'd like to hear. A true friend will let you know when you're wrong, challenge you when you're settling, remind you when you're losing your way, sometimes. These are what are valuable because they are concerned more about your growth than your temporary comfort.

Your circle should also be filled with those that inspire you. Look for others whose lives make you feel that things can still improve. Surround yourself with individuals who are willing to learn, work, pray, dream, and improve themselves. The path they may have taken might not be the same as yours, yet their discipline and character can inspire you to continue on your way.

However, do not be the one who is a negative influence in another person's life. Relationships involve not just receiving, but a giving as well. Self-examination: Do I encourage others around me? Do they seem to be developing well? Celebration of success: Do I celebrate it? Can they trust me?

To some extent, picking the right circle means leaving out some relationships. This can be very painful particularly if you have known someone for years. However, history does not justify staying in a relationship that continually undermines your peace of mind, values or progress.

Keep in mind you're not searching for a large circle. You have to have the right people. A handful of true friends with respect for your ideals and who support your development can be more meaningful than those who come and go as you get better.

Select those who refine you, and not destroy you. Select those who tell the truth, help you grow, respect your boundaries and remind you of your purpose.

While your surroundings don't necessarily dictate your fate, the people you constantly listen to can have a strong impact on the direction you choose to go in. Select your circle carefully.
