I TRIED TO STOP THE DAMN BUTTERFLIES 😭
I tried to stop the damn butterflies,
But even if I could,
Your smile instantly
Lights them up.
And the way my name
Rolls out of your mouth
Like it's already yours,
Always leaves me
Awed.
And I'd choose you
Over and over
Again, even with qualms.
Because somehow,
Loving you feels less like a choice
And more like coming home.
He has a left dimple
When he smiles too hard,
He scratches his head
When he's confused.
He sings softly
When he's alone,
And loves dancing
In the rain.
He smiles when he's nervous,
Laughs at the smallest things,
And sometimes goes quiet
When there's too much on his mind.
He remembers little things
I don't even remember telling him.
The way I take my tea,
The songs I hum without noticing,
The words I repeat
When I'm trying not to cry.
He smiled at me today,
And the dimple on his left cheek
Rose.
For a moment,
Everything else disappeared.
It was just his smile,
His eyes,
And the stupid butterflies
I had promised myself
I would stop feeling.
I thought I knew him
Like the back of my hand.
I had mastered every detail,
Every habit,
Every little expression
I thought I could predict.
But it was all
My imagination.
Because perhaps
You can know someone's favorite song,
Their favorite food,
The way they smile,
The way they speak,
And still not know them at all.
Maybe that's the beautiful part.
There will always be
Something new to discover,
Something I missed,
Something I never knew
Was hiding beneath
The person I thought
I had already figured out.
