Chapter One: The Stranger Who Changed Everything
My name is Amara Williams, and if anyone had told me that the greatest love of my life would come from the person I disliked the most, I would have laughed.
I was twenty years old, living with my mother in a quiet town where everybody knew everybody's business. My father had died when I was young, leaving my mother to raise me alone.
Life was not easy, but I had one dream: to become a successful fashion designer and give my mother the comfortable life she deserved.
Love was never part of my plan.
I had watched my mother cry over a man who promised her forever but left her with nothing but memories. Since then, I had made a promise to myself never to allow a man to become the center of my happiness.
Then Daniel entered my life.
It happened on a Monday morning.
I was rushing to a job interview at a small fashion company when someone suddenly bumped into me near the bus stop.
My handbag fell, my documents scattered across the dusty road, and the stranger continued walking as though nothing had happened.
"Excuse me!" I shouted.
He turned.
Tall, dressed in a black shirt, with a wristwatch that probably cost more than everything I owned, he looked at me with an expression I immediately disliked.
"Are you talking to me?" he asked.
"Who else? You just knocked my things down!"
He glanced at the papers on the ground.
"Then pick them up."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"Wow. You must be very proud of yourself."
He gave a small smile.
"And you must be very dramatic."
Before I could respond, he entered a black car parked nearby and drove away.
"Arrogant human being!" I muttered.
I had no idea that the same man would soon become the biggest chapter of my life.
Two days later, I arrived at the fashion company for my interview.
The receptionist directed me to the managing director's office.
I knocked twice.
"Come in."
I opened the door.
And there he was.
The man from the bus stop.
He sat behind a large wooden desk, looking at a file.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he raised his eyes.
"You?"
I folded my arms.
"Unfortunately, yes."
He leaned back in his chair.
"Do you always speak to people like that?"
"Only people who deserve it."
To my surprise, he laughed.
It was the first time I had seen him smile properly.
"My name is Daniel Carter," he said. "And I own this company."
My heart sank.
I had just insulted the person who could decide whether I got the job.
He picked up my application.
"Amara Williams. Fashion design graduate. Good results."
He looked at me again.
"Tell me, why should I employ you?"
I took a deep breath.
"Because I may not have money, connections, or an expensive car, but I have talent. And I am willing to work harder than anyone who thinks those things are enough."
His expression changed.
For the first time, he looked at me with genuine interest.
"You're hired."
I blinked.
"Excuse me?"
"Report on Monday."
I walked out of his office confused.
I had just gotten the job I desperately needed from the most irritating man I had ever met.
And somehow, I felt that my life was about to change.
Three weeks passed.
Daniel and I argued almost every day.
He complained about my designs being too bold. I complained about his impossible deadlines.
He called me stubborn.
I called him arrogant.
But something strange began happening.
He started remembering little things about me.
He knew I preferred tea without sugar. He noticed when I was tired. He would sometimes leave food on my desk when I forgot to eat during busy afternoons.
I told myself it was nothing.
After all, a kind employer was not a reason to fall in love.
But one rainy evening, everything changed.
I was standing outside the office, waiting for a bus that seemed determined never to arrive.
A car stopped beside me.
The window rolled down.
"Get in, Amara."
I looked at Daniel.
"I can manage."
"You're going to catch a cold."
"Since when do you care?"
He was silent for a moment.
"Since I realized that my day feels incomplete when I don't see you."
My heart skipped.
I looked away quickly.
"You're just being dramatic."
He smiled.
"Maybe I learned from you."
I entered the car.
Neither of us spoke for the first few minutes.
Then he asked quietly, "Amara, have you ever been in love?"
I watched the rain sliding down the window.
"Once. But I learned that promises are easy to make and difficult to keep."
He nodded.
"I understand."
I turned toward him.
"What about you?"
He kept his eyes on the road.
"I once believed money could solve everything. Then I discovered that the things money cannot buy are the things we need the most."
I didn't understand what he meant.
Not yet.
That night, when I arrived home, I found a message from an unknown number.
Goodnight, stubborn girl. Don't forget to smile tomorrow.
I stared at the message for several seconds.
Then I smiled.
For the first time in years, I was looking forward to seeing someone.
And that frightened me more than I wanted to admit.
Because the heart has a strange way of finding love in places where we never expected it.
I just didn't know that Daniel was hiding a secret that could destroy everything we were beginning to build.
