The Key Beyond Competence: Why Access Beats Raw Talent Every Time

We live in a culture that sells a comforting myth: if you work hard, keep your head down, and do exceptional work, success will naturally follow.

Meritocracy promises that talent alone rises to the top. But look around any organisation, industry, or historical era, and you will quickly realise that talent, intelligence, and execution are merely the price of entry. They can take you far, but they cannot take you to the top.

What actually bridges the gap between potential and prominence is access, which involves the exposure, visibility, and strategic positioning that put your value in front of decision-makers.

Consider a familiar workplace scenario involving two employees.

The first employee has been with the company for over a year. He is undeniably talented. He completes every deliverable flawlessly, arrives early, stays late, and executes his role with total precision. Yet, despite his stellar output, his reach stops at the edge of his desk. He operates under the assumption that his results will speak for themselves.

The second employee has been there for only eight months. Skill-wise, he may only be half as competent as the first. However, he operates with a broader scope. He is vocal, builds relationships across departments, and understands not just what is happening in his immediate role, but what is going on across the entire company. When challenges arise, he steps outside his formal job description to offer innovative solutions.

When a major promotion or leadership opportunity opens up, executive leadership inevitably chooses the second employee.

Why? Because the first employee chose to remain invisible outside his immediate bubble, while the second employee actively created access. The board cannot reward talent they do not see, nor can they promote a leader whose influence is confined to a single checklist.

Now you might be thinking, 'Is she saying that hard work doesn't pay?'

A common misconception is that advocating for visibility means replacing hard work with empty self-promotion.

That is a mistake.

Competence is non-negotiable. It is the foundation upon which trust is built. However, high performance without strategic positioning is simply silent labour.

Being good at your job gets you retained; making your value visible to key stakeholders gets you promoted. The foundation must be strong, but you cannot live in a foundation — you have to build above it.

This principle is far from modern corporate politics; it is a fundamental human dynamic seen throughout history. Consider the biblical account of Joseph.

Many attribute Joseph’s rise from an Egyptian prison to governor over all Egypt purely to his gift of interpreting dreams. But a closer examination reveals that his gift was merely the foundation, while access was the trigger.

While imprisoned, Joseph did not isolate himself in bitterness or limit his effort. He used his talent to solve a problem for a fellow inmate, who later became Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer. Joseph demonstrated his value in the limited environment he had. Years later, when Pharaoh experienced troubling dreams that no one could explain, the cupbearer remembered Joseph and mentioned his name in the royal court.

Interpreting the cupbearer’s dream was Joseph’s proof of performance; the cupbearer’s recommendation was his access to the room.

Once inside Pharaoh’s court, Joseph did not just interpret the dream; he offered a nation-saving economic initiative to manage the upcoming famine. The combination of foundational talent, strategic access, and proactive initiative transformed a prisoner into the second-most powerful leader in the empire.

To navigate your career effectively, you must understand the distinction between knowing what is happening and knowing what is going on:

  • Knowing what is happening means tracking daily operational tasks, meeting deadlines, and checking off your job description.
  • Knowing what is going on means understanding executive priorities, industry trajectory, business pain points, and organisational vision.

Your core skill is your ability to solve problems. Demonstrating that skill within your immediate team is how you build a reputation. But placing that skill in front of people who hold decision-making power is how you build leverage.

Do not let your talent remain a well-kept secret. Master your craft, step beyond the boundaries of your job description, and actively seek the visibility that turns capability into opportunity. In the end, talent creates potential, but access creates destiny.
