THE BOY WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING
Chapter Three — The Warning
Amara barely slept that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the message on her phone.
Stay away from Daniel Carter.
She had tried convincing herself that it was nothing.
A prank.
A jealous student.
Someone who simply didn't like the new boy.
But the second message kept bothering her.
You don't know who he really is.
At six thirty the next morning, Amara finally got out of bed.
She stared at herself in the mirror while fixing her school uniform.
"Forget it," she whispered.
She wasn't going to let an anonymous message ruin her day.
At least, that was what she told herself.
When Amara arrived at Rosewood Academy, something felt different.
Students were whispering more than usual.
As she walked through the corridor, she heard her name.
"That's Amara."
"She's the one."
"Apparently, she's close to Daniel."
Amara stopped.
She turned toward the voices, but the students immediately looked away.
"Tessa!"
Her best friend came running toward her.
"You heard?"
"Heard what?"
Tessa looked around before lowering her voice.
"There's another rumor."
Amara sighed.
"About Daniel?"
"Yes."
"What now?"
"They're saying he left his old school because of some family problem."
Amara frowned.
"That's different from what they were saying yesterday."
"I know."
Tessa pulled her toward the classroom.
"And there's something else."
"What?"
"Someone saw him arguing with a man outside the school gate yesterday."
Amara's expression changed.
"A man?"
"Yes."
"Who?"
"Nobody knows."
They entered the classroom.
Daniel was sitting at his desk.
He looked perfectly calm.
As if nothing had happened.
As Amara walked toward her seat, Daniel looked up.
"Good morning."
"Good morning."
He studied her face.
"You okay?"
Amara hesitated.
"Yes."
Daniel didn't look convinced.
"You sure?"
She nodded.
Before he could say anything else, their teacher entered.
The conversation ended.
But Amara kept wondering about the mysterious man.
During English class, their teacher announced a group assignment.
"I want you to work in groups of four."
The class immediately became noisy.
The teacher began assigning students.
"Jason, Tessa, Amara..."
Amara smiled at Tessa.
Then the teacher continued.
"...and Daniel."
Tessa's eyes widened.
Amara slowly looked behind her.
Daniel smiled.
Jason didn't.
"Sir," Jason said, "can I change groups?"
"No."
"But—"
"I said no."
Jason reluctantly sat down.
The four students gathered around a table.
Their assignment was to write a short presentation about trust.
Tessa laughed.
"Of all topics."
Amara looked at her.
"What?"
"Nothing."
Daniel opened his notebook.
"We should divide the work."
Jason crossed his arms.
"I'll handle the introduction."
"I'll do the conclusion," Tessa said.
Amara nodded.
"I can research the main points."
Daniel looked at her.
"I'll work with you."
Jason immediately spoke.
"Why?"
Daniel looked at him calmly.
"Because we're supposed to work as a group."
Jason said nothing.
Amara could feel the tension between them.
She decided to ignore it.
But then Daniel quietly said,
"Amara, can I talk to you after class?"
She looked at him.
"Sure."
Jason heard him.
His expression hardened.
After class, Daniel waited outside the classroom.
Amara approached.
"What did you want to tell me?"
Daniel looked around the corridor.
"Someone has been asking questions about me."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Amara remembered the messages.
"What kind of questions?"
"About my family. My old school. Why I transferred."
Her heart skipped.
"Daniel..."
He looked at her.
"Did someone contact you?"
Amara froze.
She hadn't expected him to ask that.
"Why?"
"Because you look nervous."
She hesitated.
Then she pulled out her phone.
"I received these last night."
Daniel read the messages.
His expression changed immediately.
"Where did you get this number?"
"I don't know."
Daniel looked genuinely worried.
"You shouldn't have replied."
"I only asked who it was."
"You shouldn't respond again."
"Why?"
He looked at her for several seconds.
"Because whoever sent this wants you involved in something that has nothing to do with you."
Amara folded her arms.
"But now I'm already involved."
Daniel sighed.
"I was afraid you'd say that."
That afternoon, Amara and Tessa were walking toward the school gate when they noticed Jason standing near the basketball court.
He was talking to another boy.
When Jason noticed Amara, the conversation suddenly stopped.
Tessa whispered,
"That's suspicious."
"Everything is suspicious to you."
"Because people keep acting suspicious."
They continued walking.
Then Amara heard someone call her name.
"Amara!"
She turned.
Daniel was approaching.
Tessa smiled.
"I'll give you two a minute."
Amara grabbed her arm.
"Don't."
Tessa laughed.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
She walked away.
Daniel stopped in front of Amara.
"I wanted to apologize."
"For what?"
"For dragging you into this."
"You didn't."
"Maybe not intentionally."
Amara studied him.
"Daniel, what are you hiding?"
He looked away.
"Something happened before I came here."
"What?"
"I can't explain everything yet."
"Why not?"
"Because I'm still trying to understand it myself."
Amara was quiet.
Then Daniel said,
"But there's one thing I want you to know."
"What?"
"The rumors aren't the whole truth."
Before Amara could respond, a black car pulled up outside the school gate.
Daniel immediately became silent.
His expression changed.
A man stepped out.
He looked toward Daniel.
Daniel's shoulders stiffened.
Amara noticed.
"Is that the man?"
Daniel didn't answer.
The man walked toward them.
"Daniel."
Daniel looked at him.
"We need to talk."
"I have nothing to say to you."
The man glanced at Amara.
"Who's she?"
"My friend."
The man looked at Daniel carefully.
Then he said,
"You shouldn't be making friends right now."
Amara felt uncomfortable.
Daniel stepped slightly in front of her.
"Leave her out of this."
The man's expression became serious.
"That's exactly what I'm telling you to do."
He turned and walked back toward the car.
Daniel watched him leave.
Amara looked at him.
"Who was that?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he whispered,
"Someone from my past."
The car disappeared down the road.
Amara looked at Daniel.
For the first time, she realized that the rumors weren't simply school gossip.
There was something much bigger behind Daniel's arrival.
And whatever it was, someone was determined to keep it hidden.
That night, Amara's phone buzzed again.
She looked at the screen.
Another message.
This time, it wasn't a warning.
It was a photograph.
A photograph of Daniel standing beside the mysterious man.
Underneath it were six words:
Ask Daniel who this man is.
Amara stared at the picture.
Then another message appeared.
And ask him why he came to Rosewood Academy.
Amara's hands went still.
She knew she should probably tell someone.
But a strange feeling stopped her.
Tomorrow, she would ask Daniel herself.
And she was determined to get the truth.
To be continued...
