We all have a place in life where we feel safe, comfortable and familiar. It's the comfort zone. It could be home, the workplace, friends, relationship, church, neighborhood, or a place where we feel we are safe and that nothing bad can happen. Comfort is comfort but too much comfort can lead to complacency. For this reason, use caution and be wary even in familiar surroundings.
Knowledge can be a dangerous thing. We can get accustomed to people and circumstances and ignore risks. We start to believe that they can't hurt us because they have been good to us in the past. We assume places are always safe, when they are not safe to travel. Since we have done it before we must be able to do it again! This is the type of thinking that can make us vulnerable.
But, caution does not mean to live in fear or fear of all others. It is knowing what to do, and listening. Wisdom instructs us to value people, but not to be blindly dependent on them. It reminds us to love without losing our boundaries, to trust without losing our discernment, and to enjoy peace without losing that there are times of change.
Respect some things as personal as they can be, even amongst your friends. Not all details in your life are to be shared. Just because you feel comfortable with someone, it is not a good idea to make your plans, finances, personal issues, family matters or future plans public information. The one who knows you the best may have the most chance of misusing that knowledge.
So it is with success. It's easy to become lax with discipline when life is good. You might start spending money and forget to eat or forget to take care of your responsibilities because you feel good and everything is going great. However, wisdom is needed in good seasons. Being doing well today doesn't mean you don't need to prepare for tomorrow.
The feeling of comfort can also blind us to small warning signs. Until it rains, a leaky roof might seem unimportant. A small disagreement may be harmless in the beginning, but can escalate into a feeling of resentment. It can seem like a little mistake when it turns into a big debt. It's easy to get away with a bad habit until it becomes an addiction. Smart people don't wait until a little problem becomes a big problem to do something.
If someone calls you, you don't have to accept it because they are someone who you know. You don't have to accept an invitation, opportunity, request for money or a relationship just because it is from someone who is familiar to you. It is not a sign of hatred, it's a sign of wisdom!
With people at life don't let comfort be a substitute for judgment. When things are going well, be humble, when you are at ease, be alert, when you are at peace, be prayerful. Believe in God – but act wisely.
You should feel comfortable in your own comfort zone, not without being cautious. Cherish those who are dear to you. Celebrate your progress. Appreciate your blessings. However, watch out.
Wisdom will help you to be prepared, comfort will help you to feel safe.
