Parents are among the greatest gifts God has given us. From the moment we are born, they care for us, protect us, teach us, and make many sacrifices so that we can have a better life. For this reason, we should always respect and appreciate our parents. Respecting our parents is not only a good character; it is also an important part of our religious duty.
In Islam, Allah has given parents a very high position. The Qur'an teaches Muslims to worship Allah and then immediately reminds them to treat their parents with kindness. Allah says in the Qur'an: “And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents.” (Qur'an 29:8). This shows us that being good to our parents is something that Allah takes seriously.
Our parents go through many difficulties for us. A mother carries her child, gives birth, feeds the child, stays awake during difficult nights, and continues to care for the family. A father also works, provides for the family, protects his children, and tries to give them a good future. Many times, parents sacrifice their own comfort so that their children can be comfortable.
Because of these sacrifices, we should never treat our parents with disrespect. We should speak to them politely, listen when they advise us, and help them whenever we can. Even when we disagree with them, we should control our words and avoid insults, shouting, or rude behavior.
The Qur'an gives us a beautiful instruction about how to speak to our parents. Allah says: “Do not say to them even ‘uff,’ and do not repel them, but speak to them a noble word.” (Qur'an 17:23). This teaches us that even small expressions of disrespect should be avoided.
Respecting our parents does not mean that parents are perfect. Parents can make mistakes, just as children can. However, when we notice a mistake, we should correct the situation respectfully rather than responding with anger or insults. We can explain our feelings calmly and seek advice from a trusted adult when necessary.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also taught Muslims about the great importance of parents. In a well-known hadith, a man asked the Prophet who deserved his best companionship. The Prophet mentioned his mother three times before mentioning his father. This teaches us the great value of a mother's care and sacrifice.
We should also remember that respecting parents is not something we should do only when they give us money, buy us things, or agree with us. True respect means being kind to them even when we do not get what we want. We should greet them, assist them, pray for them, and show gratitude for everything they have done for us.
One of the beautiful prayers taught in the Qur'an is: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.” (Qur'an 17:24). This is a prayer every child can make for their parents.
Life is temporary, and one day our parents may no longer be with us. Therefore, while we still have the opportunity, we should love them, respect them, forgive them, and make them feel appreciated.
In conclusion, respecting our parents is both a sign of good character and an important religious responsibility. We should never take their sacrifices for granted. Let us speak kindly to them, help them, pray for them, and appreciate them while we can. When we honour our parents with sincerity and kindness, we are also showing gratitude to Allah for the blessing of having them in our lives.
