THE BOY WHO CHANGED EVERYTHING

Chapter Five — The Girl Who Disappeared

1. A NIGHT FULL OF QUESTIONS

Amara barely slept.

She lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling while replaying the mysterious phone call in her mind.

The girl had introduced herself as Isabella.

She had claimed that Daniel's father was looking for her.

And before the call ended, she had said something that made Amara question everything she thought she knew about Daniel.

Daniel doesn't know the whole truth about his father.

What truth?

Why had Isabella disappeared?

And why was someone willing to go to such lengths to prevent Amara from discovering what had happened?

She picked up her phone and opened her conversation with Daniel.

His last message was still there.

Amara, whatever happens tomorrow, don't trust anyone who tells you they know Isabella.

She read it again.

Then she typed a reply.

Amara: Daniel, I need to tell you something.

She paused.

Should she tell him about the phone call?

What if he became angry?

What if he thought she had deliberately ignored his warning?

She deleted the message.

A few seconds later, she typed another one.

Amara: We need to talk tomorrow. It's important.

This time, she sent it.

Daniel replied almost immediately.

Daniel: Okay. I'll find you before the first lesson.

Amara put down her phone.

She wanted to trust him.

She really did.

But how could she trust someone who was hiding so much from her?

And how could she ignore the strange feeling in her heart whenever she imagined losing him?

She turned off her bedside lamp.

Tomorrow, she would get answers.

Whatever those answers turned out to be.

2. THE MORNING EVERYTHING CHANGED

The following morning, Rosewood Academy was unusually busy.

Students gathered around the noticeboard, discussing an announcement about the upcoming interschool cultural festival.

Some were excited about the performances.

Others were more interested in the talent competition, where students would compete for a scholarship and other prizes.

Tessa found Amara standing near the school gate.

"Bestie!"

Amara turned.

Tessa hurried toward her, looking excited.

"You look terrible."

Amara stared at her.

"Good morning to you too."

"I'm serious. Did you sleep at all?"

"Not really."

Tessa studied her face.

"Is this about Daniel?"

Amara sighed.

"Everything is about Daniel these days, apparently."

"That's because you've been acting like the main character in a mystery movie."

Despite herself, Amara laughed.

Tessa linked her arm through hers.

"Come on. Tell me what's happening."

Amara looked around before speaking.

"Someone called me last night."

"Who?"

"She said her name was Isabella."

Tessa stopped walking.

For several seconds, she simply stared at Amara.

"You're joking."

"I'm not."

"The Isabella?"

"I don't know if she's the same Isabella Daniel told me about, but she knew his name. She knew about his father too."

Tessa lowered her voice.

"What exactly did she say?"

Amara told her everything.

By the time she finished, Tessa's excitement had disappeared.

"This is getting serious."

"I know."

"Did you tell Daniel?"

"Not yet. I'm going to speak to him first."

Tessa squeezed her hand.

"Promise me you'll be careful."

"I promise."

They continued toward the classroom.

Neither girl noticed the student standing behind the nearby pillar.

Vanessa Cole had heard enough to understand one thing.

Amara had received a call from Isabella.

And that meant the secret Vanessa had been warned to keep was beginning to unravel.

3. DANIEL'S UNEXPECTED CONFESSION

Daniel was waiting outside their classroom when Amara arrived.

The moment he saw her, he straightened.

"Can we talk?"

Amara nodded.

They walked toward the quieter end of the corridor, away from the students gathering near the classroom doors.

Daniel looked at her.

"You said you needed to tell me something."

Amara took a deep breath.

"Someone called me last night."

His expression changed.

"Who?"

"She said her name was Isabella."

Daniel went completely still.

"What?"

"She called from an unknown number. She said she didn't have much time to talk."

Daniel took a step closer.

"What did she say?"

Amara hesitated.

"She told me that your father was looking for her."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Did she say where she was?"

"No."

"Did she tell you why she disappeared?"

"No. The call ended before I could ask her anything else."

Daniel turned away, running a hand through his hair.

"I can't believe this."

Amara watched him carefully.

"Daniel, who is Isabella really?"

He looked back at her.

"I told you. She was my best friend."

"Just your best friend?"

The question escaped before Amara could stop herself.

Daniel blinked.

For the first time that morning, a faint smile touched his face.

"Are you jealous?"

Amara's eyes widened.

"What? No!"

He laughed softly.

"I'm only asking."

"Daniel, I'm trying to have a serious conversation with you."

"Okay. I'm sorry."

But he was still smiling.

Amara crossed her arms.

"You're impossible."

"And you're cute when you're angry."

She immediately looked away.

"Stop saying things like that."

"Why?"

"Because!"

"Because what?"

She glared at him.

Daniel laughed.

For a few seconds, the tension between them disappeared.

Then his expression became serious again.

"Isabella was important to me, Amara. She knew things about my family that nobody else knew."

"What kind of things?"

Daniel looked toward the windows.

"My father has always been a powerful man. He's used to controlling situations, and he doesn't like anyone questioning him."

"And Isabella questioned him?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said something that surprised her.

"Isabella accused my father of ruining her family's business."

Amara stared at him.

"What?"

"Her father owned a small company. It was doing well until he entered into a business agreement with my father."

Daniel paused.

"After that agreement fell apart, Isabella's family lost almost everything."

"Does your father deny it?"

"He says Isabella's father made bad decisions. But Isabella believed my father deliberately destroyed the company."

Amara struggled to process the information.

"And you believed her?"

"I didn't know what to believe."

Daniel looked down.

"Then one day, she disappeared. Her phone stopped working, her family left their house, and nobody would tell me where they had gone."

"Did you try contacting the police?"

"My father said he had already spoken to people who could help find her."

"And you believed him?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No. That's why I transferred here."

Amara frowned.

"How does Rosewood Academy fit into all this?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Isabella attended a school in this city before she disappeared. I discovered that she had a close friend who might still be connected to Rosewood Academy."

Amara's heart began beating faster.

"Who?"

"I don't know her full name. Isabella only mentioned that her friend might know where to find her."

Amara stared at him.

"And you think Isabella is here?"

"I think she might be somewhere nearby."

The first bell rang.

Neither of them moved.

Then Daniel looked at Amara with an expression she had never seen before.

"There's something else I need to tell you."

"What?"

He hesitated.

"I didn't tell you the truth about why I started talking to you."

Amara's heart sank.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel looked as though he regretted bringing it up.

"When I first arrived at Rosewood Academy, I recognized your surname."

"My surname?"

"Yes. Williams."

Amara frowned.

"What's wrong with my surname?"

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Isabella once told me that she had a friend whose mother worked with my father several years ago."

Amara stared at him.

"My mother?"

"I don't know whether it's the same person. But when I saw your name on the class list, I wondered if you might know something about Isabella."

Amara felt as though the corridor had suddenly become colder.

"So you started talking to me because you thought I could help you find her?"

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"At first, I was curious. But that changed."

"Changed how?"

He stepped closer.

"Amara, I like talking to you. I like the way you laugh at my terrible jokes. I like how you argue with me when you think I'm wrong. And I like how you look at people as though their problems matter to you."

He paused.

"I wasn't expecting to feel any of that."

Amara's anger softened, but the hurt remained.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't know whether the connection was real. And once I started getting to know you, I was afraid you'd think everything between us was a lie."

Amara looked away.

She wanted to believe him.

But she needed time.

"I have to go to class."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Okay."

She walked away without looking back.

Daniel remained in the corridor, watching her disappear into the classroom.

For the first time since arriving at Rosewood Academy, he was afraid that his search for Isabella might cost him something he hadn't expected to find.

Someone he genuinely cared about.

4. VANESSA MAKES HER MOVE

During the break between lessons, Vanessa approached Amara near the cafeteria.

"Hi, Amara."

Amara looked up from her lunch.

"Hi."

Vanessa sat opposite her without waiting for an invitation.

"I wanted to talk to you about Daniel."

Amara immediately became cautious.

"What about him?"

Vanessa smiled.

"I think you should be careful."

Amara almost laughed.

"That's what everyone keeps telling me."

"Maybe there's a reason."

"Do you know something about him?"

Vanessa hesitated just long enough for Amara to notice.

"I've heard things."

"What things?"

"That Daniel isn't as innocent as he looks."

Amara put down her spoon.

"Vanessa, if you have something to say, just say it."

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Have you ever wondered why he suddenly became interested in you?"

Amara's expression hardened.

"What are you trying to say?"

"I'm saying that Daniel Carter has a reason for being here. And I don't think you're the only person he wants to get close to."

Amara stared at her.

"How do you know that?"

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"Let's just say I know more than you think."

She stood and adjusted her skirt.

"Just be careful with your heart, Amara. Boys like Daniel can make you feel special while hiding the truth from you."

Then she walked away.

Amara sat in silence.

Vanessa's words had hurt because they touched a fear she was already struggling with.

Had Daniel genuinely started caring about her?

Or had she simply become another person who could help him find Isabella?

Across the cafeteria, Daniel entered with Jason.

He glanced toward Amara.

She looked away.

Daniel noticed.

Jason noticed too.

And for the first time that morning, Jason smiled.

5. THE BOY WHO REFUSED TO GIVE UP

After school, Amara headed toward the library.

She needed to return a book before going home.

She was walking down the corridor when she heard footsteps behind her.

"Amara, wait."

She recognized Daniel's voice.

She kept walking.

"Please."

Something in his tone made her stop.

Daniel caught up with her.

"Can we talk?"

She turned to face him.

"We've already talked."

"I know. But I don't want you leaving school thinking I was using you."

Amara folded her arms.

"Then why didn't you tell me the truth from the beginning?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of losing the chance to know you."

Amara looked at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she said quietly, "You don't get to decide what I can handle, Daniel."

He nodded.

"You're right."

"If you want me to trust you, you have to be honest with me."

"I will be."

"All of it?"

"All of it."

She studied his face.

"Even if it's something bad?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Especially if it's something bad."

Amara's expression softened.

She still had questions.

She still felt hurt.

But she could see that he was trying.

"I need time," she said.

"I understand."

"And no more secrets that involve me."

Daniel nodded.

"Deal."

He extended his hand.

Amara looked at it.

Then she shook it.

His fingers closed gently around hers.

Neither spoke for a moment.

Then Daniel smiled.

"So, are we friends again?"

Amara tried to hide her smile.

"We never stopped being friends."

"Good."

He released her hand.

"Because I was planning to ask you something."

"What?"

Daniel suddenly looked nervous.

It was such an unusual expression on his face that Amara almost laughed.

"Would you like to come to the cultural festival with me?"

Amara blinked.

"The school festival?"

"Yes."

"As friends?"

Daniel tilted his head.

"Would you prefer something else?"

Her cheeks warmed.

"Daniel!"

He laughed.

"Okay, okay. As friends. For now."

Amara shook her head, smiling despite herself.

"I'll think about it."

"I'll take that as a maybe."

He walked away, turning once to look at her.

Amara watched him go.

For the first time that day, she felt hopeful.

Perhaps their story wasn't over before it had even begun.

Perhaps there was room for trust, even when the truth was complicated.

But she didn't know that someone had overheard their conversation.

And that person was already planning how to keep them apart.

6. THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

That evening, Tessa invited Amara to her house to work on their cultural festival project.

They sat on the living-room floor with notebooks, coloured paper, and a laptop spread around them.

For almost an hour, they discussed decorations and performance ideas.

But Amara couldn't concentrate.

Finally, Tessa closed her notebook.

"Okay. Enough."

Amara looked up.

"What?"

"You've been staring at the same page for twenty minutes. Tell me what's wrong."

Amara sighed.

"Daniel told me something today."

Tessa leaned forward.

"What?"

She listened as Amara explained Daniel's connection to Isabella and his confession about initially being curious about her surname.

When Amara finished, Tessa remained quiet.

Then she said, "At least he admitted it."

"That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt."

"I know."

Tessa moved closer.

"But Amara, he could have continued lying. Instead, he told you the truth when you confronted him."

Amara looked down.

"I just don't want to be someone's second choice."

Tessa took her hand.

"You're not a second choice. You're a person who deserves honesty. Make sure he understands that."

Amara smiled faintly.

"Since when did you become so wise?"

"Since I became friends with someone who makes terrible decisions when a handsome boy smiles at her."

Amara threw a cushion at her.

They both burst out laughing.

For a moment, everything felt normal again.

Then Tessa's laptop made a notification sound.

An email had arrived.

Tessa glanced at the screen.

"That's strange."

"What?"

"I've received an email from an unknown sender."

Amara moved closer.

"What does it say?"

Tessa opened it.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just one sentence.

If Amara Williams wants to know what happened to Isabella, she should ask her own mother.

Amara went completely still.

"My mother?"

Tessa clicked on the attachment.

A photograph appeared.

It showed two women standing outside a large building several years earlier.

One was a younger version of Isabella's mother.

The other was unmistakably Amara's mother, Grace Williams.

Amara stared at the photograph.

She had never seen it before.

But what frightened her most was the handwritten date beneath it.

The photograph had been taken the year Isabella disappeared.

Amara's voice trembled.

"Why was my mother with Isabella's mother?"

Tessa had no answer.

Amara reached for her phone.

She needed to call her mother immediately.

But before she could dial, another email arrived.

This time, it contained a short message.

Your mother knows why Isabella disappeared. Ask her before Daniel finds out.

Amara stared at the screen.

Her mother had always told her that honesty was the foundation of every relationship.

She had taught Amara to trust people.

To forgive.

To believe that the truth would eventually come out.

But what if her own mother had been hiding something all these years?

What if Daniel wasn't the only person keeping secrets?

Amara stood abruptly.

"I need to go home."

Tessa rose with her.

"Do you want me to come with you?"

Amara shook her head.

"I need to speak to my mother alone."

Tessa hugged her.

"Call me if you need anything."

Amara nodded and hurried out.

Her mind was racing.

For the first time, she wasn't simply worried about Daniel.

She was worried about her family.

7. THE TRUTH HER MOTHER HID

When Amara arrived home, she found her mother in the kitchen preparing dinner.

Grace Williams looked up and smiled.

"You're home early, sweetheart."

Amara stood in the doorway.

"Mum, I need to ask you something."

Grace noticed the seriousness in her daughter's expression.

"What is it?"

Amara took out her phone and showed her the photograph.

The moment Grace saw it, the smile disappeared from her face.

For several seconds, she didn't speak.

Then she slowly placed the spoon on the counter.

"Where did you get this?"

"Someone sent it to Tessa's email."

Grace looked toward the window.

"Mum, who is Isabella?"

Her mother closed her eyes.

Amara felt her heart sink.

"You know her?"

Grace gripped the edge of the counter.

"Amara, there are things about the past that you don't understand."

"Then explain them to me."

"Not now."

"Why not?"

"Because you're too young to be involved in this."

Amara stared at her.

"Someone is sending me messages. Daniel's father is involved. Isabella has disappeared, and now I find out that you knew her family."

Her voice broke.

"How am I supposed to stay out of it?"

Grace looked at her daughter.

For a moment, Amara thought she would finally explain everything.

Instead, her mother reached for her shoulders.

"Listen to me carefully. I don't want you investigating this matter."

"Why?"

"Because it could be dangerous."

"Is Daniel's father dangerous?"

Grace didn't answer.

"Did you help Isabella?"

Still no answer.

Amara stepped back.

"Mum, please."

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

Then she whispered,

"I promised someone I would never speak about what happened."

Amara stared at her.

"Who?"

Grace looked directly into her daughter's eyes.

"Isabella's mother."

Amara's breath caught.

Before she could ask another question, her mother's phone rang.

Grace glanced at the screen.

Her face turned pale.

She answered.

"Hello?"

Amara watched her mother's expression change as she listened.

Then Grace whispered three words.

"Oh, no. Please."

She ended the call and gripped the counter.

Amara rushed toward her.

"Mum, what's wrong?"

Grace looked at her daughter with frightened eyes.

Then she spoke in a trembling voice.

"Isabella has returned to the city."

Amara froze.

"What?"

Grace shook her head.

"And if Richard Carter discovers where she's hiding, all of us could be in trouble."

The kitchen fell silent.

Amara looked at the photograph on her phone.

Then she looked at her mother.

The truth she had been searching for was no longer just about Daniel.

It was about her own family.

And whatever had happened years ago, it was about to catch up with all of them.
