Messi crosses the international finish line

Lionel Messi: The End of an International Era

There are some moments in football that feel bigger than a single match. Lionel Messi’s final appearance for Argentina was one of them. On October 6, 2026, the legendary number 10 walked onto the pitch at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires for the final time as an Argentina international. In front of more than 85,000 emotional supporters, Messi helped Argentina defeat Benin 3–0, scoring one goal and assisting twice. It was the final chapter of a remarkable 21-year international career.

Messi’s journey with Argentina was never simple. When he first began representing the senior national team, expectations were enormous. He was already being compared with some of Argentina’s greatest footballers, and many supporters expected him to deliver trophies immediately.

Instead, Messi experienced years of heartbreak.

He reached major finals but repeatedly fell short. The criticism became intense, with some questioning whether his incredible club performances could ever be reproduced with the national team. The pressure was enormous, especially because Argentina had a football culture that demanded success.

In 2016, after another painful final defeat, Messi briefly announced his international retirement. However, he returned to the national team and continued chasing the dream.

That decision eventually changed Argentine football forever.

Under Lionel Scaloni, Argentina became one of the strongest national teams in the world. Messi finally lifted his first major senior international trophy when Argentina won the Copa América in 2021. A year later, he reached the greatest achievement of his career: winning the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

For Messi, the World Cup was more than just another trophy. It was the trophy that had followed him throughout his entire career. Winning it with Argentina transformed his relationship with the country. The player who had once been heavily criticized became a national hero.

Argentina continued its success by winning the 2024 Copa América, giving Messi another major international trophy. The team also reached the 2026 World Cup final, although Spain eventually defeated Argentina.

Even after that disappointment, Messi’s place in Argentine football history was secure.

His final international appearance provided a fitting farewell. Against Benin, Messi scored his final goal for Argentina from the penalty spot and created two more goals for his teammates. He finished his international career with 208 appearances, 126 goals and 68 assists, making him Argentina’s record appearance-maker and all-time leading scorer.

But statistics only tell part of the story.

Messi represented Argentina for more than two decades. Generations of fans grew up watching him play. Young footballers copied his dribbling, celebrated like him and dreamed of wearing the number 10 shirt one day.

His impact also went beyond Argentina. Around the world, millions of people watched Messi represent his country through victories, defeats, celebrations and heartbreak. His story became one of perseverance—the story of a player who continued fighting even when international success seemed impossible.

Perhaps one of the most powerful parts of Messi’s legacy is the way his relationship with Argentina changed. Early in his career, he was sometimes treated as an outsider because he had grown up in Spain after leaving Argentina as a child. Over time, however, his performances and dedication changed everything.

He eventually became the captain, leader and symbol of a golden generation.

Now, Argentina must move forward without him.

The number 10 shirt will never feel completely the same. There will be new players, new leaders and eventually a new generation capable of creating their own history. But replacing Messi is not simply about finding another talented footballer. It is about replacing a player who combined creativity, intelligence, goals, assists and leadership in a way that football rarely sees.

Messi’s international retirement does not mean the end of his football career. He has stepped away from Argentina, but he continues his club career with Inter Miami. His international story, however, is now complete.

From the disappointment of lost finals to the unforgettable night in Qatar, from criticism to worldwide admiration, Messi’s journey with Argentina has been extraordinary.

He leaves behind trophies, records and countless memories.

Most importantly, he leaves behind a legacy.

The boy who once dreamed of representing Argentina eventually became the captain who lifted the World Cup for his country. He wore the blue and white for 21 years and gave everything he had to the shirt.

Now, the final whistle has been blown on his international career.

A chapter has ended.

But the legend of Lionel Messi in the blue and white will live forever. 🇦🇷🐐🏆
