Letters to My Friend š¤
16: When Nobody Is Watching
Dear Friend,
There is a version of you that the world knows.
And then there is the version of you that exists when the room is empty.
When nobody is clapping.
Nobody is checking.
Nobody would ever know.
Who are you then?
It is easy to look good in public.
It is easy to say the right things, smile at the right people, show up when everyone is watching, and appear like everything is in order.
But character is often built in places where nobody applauds.
In the quiet room where you choose to pray even when you don't feel like it.
In the moment when temptation comes, and you choose obedience even though nobody would know if you gave in.
In the decision to tell the truth when a lie would be easier.
In the kindness you offer when there is no recognition attached to it.
In the moments when you could take the glory for yourself, but quietly remember that everything you have came from God.
Those moments may seem small.
They are not.
Heaven sees what people don't.
Jesus said:
"...thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly."
ā Matthew 6:18
Dear friend, your private life is not separate from your spiritual life.
It is your spiritual life.
What happens in secret eventually shapes who you become in public.
The prayers you pray when nobody hears them shape your dependence on God.
The choices you make when nobody sees them shape your character.
The things you repeatedly allow into your heart shape your desires.
And the person you are when no one is watching is often the person you truly are becoming.
So perhaps the question isn't simply, "Am I doing well?"
Perhaps it is:
"Am I becoming someone God can trust with what I keep praying for?"
Because sometimes, we ask God for greater influence while neglecting greater integrity.
We ask for a platform while ignoring the private places where our character is being formed.
We ask Him to use us while resisting the quiet work He wants to do within us.
But God is not only interested in what He can do through you.
He cares about what He is doing in you.
So guard the secret places.
Guard your thoughts.
Guard your choices.
Guard what you entertain when nobody is watching.
And when you fail, don't hide from God.
Run to Him.
Let Him correct you.
Let Him cleanse you.
Let Him rebuild you.
Because the goal isn't to become someone who merely looks holy.
It is to become someone who genuinely belongs to God even in the places no one else can see.
Reflection šæ
If nobody could ever applaud you, discover you, or reward you, would you still choose what is right?
Prayer š¤
Father, make me the same person in secret that I appear to be in public. Purify my heart and search the places nobody else can see. Strengthen my convictions when temptation comes, teach me to choose obedience over applause, and help me honour You even when nobody is watching. May my private life bring You glory just as much as my public life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
With hope always,
Your Friend. š¤
