PRIDE COMES BEFORE A FALL

PRIDE COMES BEFORE A FALL

Pride is one of the sneakiest evils of life. It may be accompanied by confidence, success, or achievement, but not permitted to expand unchecked, it can erode the very things that led to success. This is a call to action for us from the Word of God in Proverbs 16:18: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” This is a strong reminder that no matter how high we climb, we must not lose our sense of humility.

Pride causes a person to think he is better than another. It can lead to a person's failure to take correction, to accept assistance, and to ignore their own circle of friends. An arrogant one might believe that he has all the answers and doesn't need anyone. Sadly, life doesn't always make us realize that we are not all that self-sufficient.

Evaluate a happy man who works hard and becomes rich. Initially, he recalls the source of his origin and values everyone who helped him. As he gets richer, his attitude changes. He starts to feel superior to the less fortunate. He begins to not listen to advice, and start making wrong choices, because he thinks he will not fail. After some bad choices, he loses everything. It wasn't that he was rich, it was that he was proud.

Pride can be a factor in relationships also. It is hard for people to say “I am sorry” even when they are wrong. They can decide that by losing the good one they have they will not have to face that they are wrong. At times, people develop a sense of pride, therefore they do not bother forgiving or apologizing because they think that doing so may make them look weak. In fact, when we acknowledge a mistake, we're showing strength and maturity.

Humility, however, is a teaching that keeps us striving to keep our feet on the ground no matter how successful we are. It reminds us to be grateful for every success, rather than prideful, and to always be aware that we are making progress. A situation we find ourselves today can be different the next day. What we have money can go and disappear. The opportunities that we have can fly away. Our strength and abilities too are gifts that must be used judiciously.

Therefore, let us learn to value people, embrace correction and be teachable. We must never take good advice as being an attack when it happens. In some cases, the remedy is the only thing that saves us from doing a "big mistake.

Never become complacent about success and lose sight of where you started. Don't let being in charge make you rude to anyone under you. Don't use rewards to make you feel like you're better than others.

Life is unpredictable. The person at the top one day might need a hand from another person one day and the person struggling one day might turn into the success story one day.

The standard of greatness is not the number of people who you're down on, it's the number of people you're up on. When things go well for you, don't get arrogant. Remember to be teachable when you are praised. Be thankful when opportunities present themselves.

Pride may raise a man up a moment, but humility will bring him down. The higher you go, the more important it is to be humble, for pride goeth before a fall.
