SWEET-SMELLING SAVOUR
Some people arrive like music in a quiet room,
Others like rain on a thirsty afternoon.
But there are those whose presence lingers long after they leave,
Like the scent of flowers tucked between the pages of a book.
They are gentle without being weak,
Kind without keeping a record,
And strong enough to remain tender
In a world that rewards the hardened.
They leave warmth in conversations,
Courage in the hearts they touch,
And little pieces of themselves in places
Where they never expected to mean so much.
A sweet-smelling savour is not the loudest person in the room,
Nor the one whose name travels farthest.
It is the soul that makes life a little lighter,
The presence that leaves another heart stronger.
It is choosing kindness when bitterness would be easier,
Offering grace when judgment is deserved,
And treating people with dignity
Even when there is nothing to gain in return.
It is the hand that helps without taking a picture,
The voice that comforts without demanding praise,
The heart that remembers what it means to be human
In a world that sometimes forgets.
For time will scatter our possessions,
And distance may blur the details of our names,
But the goodness we plant in other people
Can outlive the moment that gave it a place.
Let me be remembered in the quiet things,
In the courage someone found after speaking with me,
In the smile that returned to a weary face,
In the kindness that reminded someone they mattered.
Let me leave no bitterness as my signature,
No cruelty as the echo of my days.
Let the people I encounter breathe easier,
Knowing that gentleness still has a place.
And when I have moved beyond a season,
When another chapter calls me somewhere new,
May the spaces I once occupied feel warmer,
And may something good remain because I passed through.
For I do not wish merely to be noticed;
I wish to make a difference that is felt.
May my life be the kind of fragrance
That makes the world a little softer,
A sweet-smelling savour,
Long after the flowers have withered.
