YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE

Letters to My Friend šŸ¤

Day 27: You Don't Have to Be Available to Everyone

Dear Friend,

Can I tell you something?

You don't have to be available to everyone.

I know. It sounds almost wrong, doesn't it?

We're taught to answer quickly. To show up. To help. To be nice. To never disappoint anyone.

So we keep saying yes, even when our hearts are screaming no.

We reply to messages when we're exhausted. We listen to other people's problems when we barely have the strength to process our own. We show up for people when we're running on empty, afraid that if we don't, they'll think we've changed.

And sometimes, we keep giving because we're scared.

Scared of being misunderstood. Scared of losing people. Scared that the moment we stop being useful, we'll stop being important.

So we make ourselves available, hoping nobody ever has a reason to leave.

But, dear friend, you shouldn't have to abandon yourself to prove that you love someone.

Read that again.

You can be a kind person and still have boundaries. You can be a good friend and still need a break. You can genuinely care about someone without making their every problem your personal responsibility.

And no, that doesn't make you selfish.

Sometimes, I wonder how many of us are exhausted, not because we're doing too much, but because we're carrying too much that was never ours to carry in the first place.

We've become so concerned about being there for everybody that we forget to check on ourselves.

We ask, "Are you okay?" but rarely admit when we're not.

We encourage people to rest while feeling guilty whenever we do the same.

We tell others that it's okay to take a break, yet struggle to give ourselves that same permission.

And then we wonder why we're tired.

Dear friend, even Jesus withdrew from the crowds.

The Bible says:

"And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed." — Luke 5:16 (KJV)

Jesus loved people deeply. He healed the sick, taught the multitudes, and showed compassion to those who needed Him. Yet, He also made room for solitude and prayer.

He didn't spend every moment responding to the demands of the crowd.

He withdrew.

He made room to commune with the Father.

If Jesus, in His earthly ministry, withdrew to pray, why do you feel guilty for needing a little space?

You are not God, my friend. You cannot meet every need, solve every problem, or be everything to everyone.

And you're not supposed to.

Some messages can wait. Some conversations can happen another day. Some requests deserve a respectful no.

You don't have to explain every decision until everyone understands it. You don't have to sacrifice your peace just to maintain the image of being the person who is always available.

Of course, boundaries aren't an excuse to become careless with people's feelings. Love still requires patience, kindness, honesty, and consideration.

But love also needs wisdom.

You can love people without giving everyone unlimited access to you.

You can forgive someone without returning to the same unhealthy patterns. You can support a friend without becoming responsible for every decision they make.

And you can be a good friend without becoming everyone's emergency contact. šŸ˜‚šŸ¤

So, the next time you need to rest, rest.

The next time you cannot help, be honest.

The next time you need to spend time alone with God, put your phone aside without feeling like you've committed a crime.

You are allowed to be human, too.

And please, don't wait until resentment builds up before you admit that you've been giving more than you can sustain.

Learn to recognise your limits before exhaustion forces you to acknowledge them.

You don't have to be available to everyone to be valuable to someone.

Your worth was never measured by how quickly you reply, how many people you rescue, or how often you put yourself last.

God's love for you isn't a reward for being everybody's favourite person.

So breathe, dear friend.

You can put the phone down.

You can take a step back.

You can rest.

The world will keep moving, and God will still be God.

You don't have to carry everybody.

Sometimes, the most loving thing you can do for others is to learn how to care for yourself, too.

And sometimes, your quietest no is what makes room for a much-needed yes to God, to rest, and to the things He has entrusted to you.

Love people. Serve faithfully. But don't forget that you are a person who needs care, too. šŸ¤

Reflection 🌿

Where in your life have you been saying yes out of guilt when your heart really needed to say no? What boundary might God be asking you to establish?

Prayer šŸ¤

Father, teach me to love people without losing myself. Give me the wisdom to know when to show up, when to step back, and when to simply rest in You. Deliver me from the fear of disappointing people and the need to prove my worth through constant availability. Help me establish healthy boundaries with love, humility, and wisdom. Remind me that I am not responsible for carrying everyone, because You never asked me to take Your place in their lives. Let my service flow from a heart that is rooted in You, not one that is exhausted from trying to please everyone. In Jesus' name, Amen.

With hope always,

Your Friend. šŸ¤
