WHAT KEEPS YOU UP?
Up at night when the world has retired to a brief death.
Is it really insomnia's grip over your wakeful lashes?
Is it truly the ingested caffeine at work?
Or the nightmares you never dream to have?
Oh! Perhaps the demons again–and the only angel coming through is your light bulb.
It's probably the night candle that burns as you wax your brain for the paper.
Or maybe the demand of clients that has formed a mountain.
Or possibly the market chart that might turn green, so you'd rather your eyes be red.
Peradventure the ticking of the clock that threatens another day of bustling.
Haply your eyes are open–shut to legislate on bended knees,
Or they are on the trigger as you watch out for the night marauders.
Perhaps they refuse to black out just to listen to the peace the crickets enchant.
Or they are sleepily awake, lounging in the reverie of that dame's doe eyes.
Likely they stay alert that the heart and mind reconcile decades-old scuffles.
Or that they doggedly search for keys to unlock the future.
Yet, whatsoever be the reason for your vigil,
The paradox remains that whatever keeps you awake is also awake.
