There is a certain age when everyone suddenly starts expecting you to have your life figured out. You are supposed to know what career you want, have money, be independent, have a good relationship, and somehow already have a five-year plan.
The funny part is that nobody really tells you when you are supposed to become “successful.” You just start feeling like you are running out of time.
Everyone Seems Ahead
Social media makes it even harder.
You open Instagram or TikTok and see someone your age buying a car, starting a business, travelling, getting a good job or announcing an engagement. Meanwhile, you are sitting somewhere trying to figure out how to survive the week.
You start asking yourself, “What am I doing wrong?”
Sometimes, it is not even jealousy. You are genuinely happy for them. But you cannot help wondering when your own turn will come.
The Pressure From Family
Family expectations can make things even more intense.
You hear questions like, “What are you doing with your life?” or “When are you going to start making money?” They may not mean any harm, but when you are already struggling with your own expectations, those questions can feel like pressure.
You want to make your family proud, but sometimes you are still trying to understand yourself.
Trying to Make Money While Studying
Being a student comes with its own kind of pressure.
There are school fees, transportation, food, handouts, practical materials and unexpected expenses. You want to save money, but somehow there is always something that needs to be paid for.
At the same time, you see people talking about side hustles and making money online. You want to try everything because you also want to become financially independent.
But balancing school, personal life and trying to make money is not always easy.
The Fear of Falling Behind
One of the hardest parts of growing up is feeling like you are behind.
You may have friends who already know exactly what they want. Another person may already have a successful business. Someone else may seem to have their relationships and finances completely figured out.
Then there is you, still trying to put the pieces together.
But the truth is, we rarely see the full picture of someone else's life. Social media shows achievements, not confusion. It shows the finished product, not the years of mistakes, failures and uncertainty behind it.
Maybe I’m Not Behind
I am slowly learning that life is not a race.
Not everyone will graduate at the same time. Not everyone will get their first job at the same age. Some people will discover their passion early, while others will need more time.
And that is okay.
Being unsure does not mean you are failing. Moving slowly does not mean you are not making progress.
Sometimes, progress is simply waking up and trying again when you have no idea what the future looks like.
I’m Still Figuring It Out
I may not have everything figured out yet, and honestly, I am beginning to understand that I do not have to.
I can want more for myself while still appreciating where I am now. I can make mistakes, change my plans, start again and take my time.
Maybe success is not about getting everything right before a certain age.
Maybe success is becoming the person you are proud to be, one step at a time.
And maybe, just maybe, I am not behind. I am simply still becoming. ❤️
