Being kind is a beautiful thing. Being gentle, patient and considerate toward people is something we should all strive for. But somewhere between being a good person and constantly trying to keep everyone happy, we can forget that kindness also needs boundaries.
Sometimes, when people see that you are calm and gentle, they begin to assume that you will tolerate anything. They mistake your patience for weakness and your kindness for permission. Before you realize it, people are taking advantage of the very qualities that make you a good person.
And this is why being kind does not mean being available for everything.
There is a difference between kindness and people-pleasing.
When you are kind to people even when nobody is watching, when you do good without needing recognition or approval, then kindness is probably part of who you are. But when you constantly change yourself because you are worried about what people will think, or when you keep saying yes because you are afraid of saying no, you may not be practising kindness anymore. You may simply be trying to please people.
And sometimes, people-pleasing comes from fear.
You may be afraid that the person will misunderstand you. You may worry that they will think you are rude, selfish or uncaring. You may even be scared that saying no will change the relationship.
But saying no does not automatically make you selfish.
There should be a limit to what you are willing to accept from people. You can love someone and still have boundaries with them. You can be generous without giving everyone unlimited access to you. You can forgive someone without allowing them to repeatedly hurt you.
Think about a house without a gate or walls.
Anyone can walk in and out whenever they want. There is nothing separating what belongs to you from the outside world. There is no qualification for access.
Your life can become like that when you have no boundaries.
People can come into your space whenever they want, demand your time whenever they want, treat you however they want and still expect you to remain calm because “that's just how you are.”
But a house with a gate does not mean the owner hates people.
It simply means not everyone gets unrestricted access.
The same should apply to your life.
You need to know what you will and will not accept. You need to know what matters to you, what your limits are and what you are unwilling to compromise. And once you set those boundaries, you have to respect them yourself.
If you don't like people wasting your time or constantly keeping you waiting, you should also learn not to do that to other people. If you expect honesty, be honest. If you expect respect, give respect.
Boundaries are not rules we create only for other people. They are standards we are also willing to live by.
And yes, some people may think your boundaries are rude.
They may say you've changed. They may wonder why you are no longer as available as you used to be. They may even try to make you feel guilty for saying no.
But sometimes, people don't dislike your boundaries because they are wrong. They dislike them because your boundaries no longer allow them to do whatever they want.
That is not your problem to carry.
You are allowed to protect your peace.
You are allowed to decide who gets access to different parts of your life.
You are allowed to say no without writing a long explanation.
You are allowed to walk away from situations that repeatedly make you uncomfortable.
Being a good person does not mean allowing people to step all over you. It does not mean tolerating everything just to keep the peace. And it certainly does not mean giving everyone the same level of access to you.
Be kind, but be wise.
Keep your gentle heart, but don't leave the door to your life permanently open.
Because kindness without boundaries can become an invitation for people to take what you never offered them.
Qualify the access you give to people.
Not everyone deserves a key to every part of your life simply because you are a kind person.
